Repairs pledge for damp-ridden flat

Crucial repairs will be done to a woman’s “disgusting” flat after confusion over a letter saying no further work would be carried out.

Terrie Burden, of Wayland Close in Harmans Water, contacted getbracknell after receiving a letter from L&Q London Housing Association, on Wednesday, December 2, which said no further work would be done on her mould and damp-ridden house.

However, the company says the letter was sent in error and the work will be carried out.

Terrie’s house has a strong smell of damp and the curtains and carpets have been ruined.

She said: “The flat’s pretty disgusting, I sleep in a wet bed every night and it’s made me ill.

“The curtains are all damp and the carpet’s ruined.

“There was some work carried out last year to get rid of the damp but it’s come back now.

“I hope it works this time.”

A spokesman from the company said a surveyor visited her on Wednesday, December 9, and found a broken storage heater that had not been reported, which will now be replaced.

Specialists are also set to inspect her ventilation fans to make sure they are working and treatment will be carried out to the mould on the walls.

It was also found she was using a gas heater which was contributing to the condensation that was causing the damp.

The housing association spokesman said: “There is a possibility that a letter was generated by our computer system in error which says that no further work will be carried out. The property has been inspected and L&Q instructed contractors to carry out all of the necessary repairs and maintenance.”

Terrie also showed getbracknell  a letter from her doctor saying she had developed sinus problems because of the condition of the house.
