Tributes paid to courageous Alan Tunnicliffe
February 11, 2009
A courageous man lived for eight years knowing he could die at any time but did not want to worry his parents by telling them.
Alan Tunnicliffe, son of Lord and Lady Tunnicliffe, died aged 38 from a heart condition he had lived with since birth.
Alan had undergone an operation in 2001 when he was told his condition had worsened and that he could die any time without warning.
His mum Lady Sue Dale Tunnicliffe said: “He always knew it, but he didn’t tell us. His brother told me he didn’t want to upset us.
“He was very courageous.”
Alan loved books and was a steward for real ale club CAMRA, marshalling at events and beer festivals.
He attended The Pines Primary School in Hanworth and then Ranelagh School in Bracknell.
He lived in the family home in Octavia, Roman Hill, until he left for university aged 18.
He worked as a contractor for London Underground and was also a qualified business studies and science teacher.
Alan had nicknames including Mr Tea because he loved the drink and Shirley because his hair curled at the back like Shirley Temple’s.
Lady Tunnicliffe, who still lives in Hanworth, added: “He was just a grand chap.
"He emitted nice, positive, friendly vibes and he was very and patient and caring.”
Alan died on January 18.
His funeral was held on Monday.
