A 13-year-old destined for Olympic stardom found out she had won a Bracknell snowboarding competition while in hospital being treated for a suspected fractured elbow.
Becky Menday, from Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, travelled to the John Nike Ski Centre for the Southernfreestyle competition on Saturday, June 9, and left with her arm in a sling.
Becky, who has been freestyle snowboarding for five years since the age of eight, said: “The competition was still going on and I hit a rail, dived head first and landed on my arm.
“It really hurt and I had to go to hospital to get it checked – while I was there I got lots of Facebook messages saying I had won.
“My friends think me snowboarding is really cool and are proud of me.”
Becky heard the news she had come first in the under-16 girls category after discovering a possible fracture to her elbow, but due to the amount of swelling will have to return to hospital for an X-ray today.
She said: “I am just hoping it is not a fracture because if I get a cast I won’t be able to snowboard.
“I hope it’s just very badly bruised and will be fine in a couple of weeks.”
The Year Eight pupil has been selected for Team GB Junior Freestyle team, which means she has the chance to be selected for the Winter Olympics in 2018.
Becky’s dad Jeff Menday said: “I am so incredibly proud of everything she has achieved and of all the hard work and dedication she has put into her sport, at such a young age. But most of all the fun and excitement we have shared together has been priceless.”
Becky regularly competes in competitions including the British Championships and came third in the Burton European Open last year.
Chairman of the Southernfreestyle Club, Dave Saunders, who organised the event, said: “I am really pleased with the large turnout this year with more than 50 competitors.
“Injuries are inevitable as this is an extreme sport – we hope Becky gets well soon.”
Southernfreestyle Club was set up over five years ago and is now regarded in the snow sports industry as one of the main training platforms at grass roots level to launch young individuals into the England and GB Freestyle ski teams.
Two ski club members, who participated in Saturday’s event, Michael Rowlands, 14, from Chatham, Kent, and Tom Saunders, 14, who attends The Emmbrook School in Wokingham, have recently been selected for the England Freestyle team and hope to represent GB in future Winter Olympic Games.
