Abbey RFC’s all-conquering Under-12s do the double
April 27, 2012
Abbey Under-12s followed their recent success in the Land Rover Cup by being crowned champions of the inaugural London Irish League.
Peter Lane drove over to seal a 2-1 win over league runners-up Winchester in the last few moments of the play-off final after the Abbey forwards had secured good ball at a scrum five metres from their opponents’ line.
Abbey’s scrum was immense with Seb Tong, Daniel Willis and Ben Stacey providing a dominant front row, Ben Hallett and Ed Houghton continuing their fine form in the second row and Archie Collins at No. 8.
Half-backs Harry Underwood and Ewan Morgan created for the centres and wings to play some exciting rugby, while full back Josh Wetten was reliable in defence and a threat in attack.
Abbey, who won all 12 league games, swept aside Fordingbridge 4-0 in the play-off semi-finals thanks to tries from George Lewington, Hamzah Hussain, Jack Broadbent and Lane.
Abbey, who are coached by Steve Lane and Steve Wood, were presented with their trophy and medals at Madejski Stadium during half-time of Irish’s recent game against Saracens.
