McDermott hoping Reading FC get home FA Cup draw

By Jonny Fordham
January 05, 2013

Brian McDermott is hoping Reading get a home draw in the fourth round of the FA Cup after coming from behind to beat Crawley Town 3-1.

Royals were shocked when after just 14 seconds Nicky Adams smashed a 20-yard effort into the top-corner of Adam Federici’s net.

But they held their nerve to avoid the banana-skin  at Broadfield Stadium thanks to an equaliser from Adam Le Fondre in the 13th minute, a penalty from the former League Two star four minutes into the second half, and a Noel Hunt strike a minute before half time.

"We knew this was going to be difficult today and after 14 seconds we were 1-0 down,” said McDermott.

“It was a great strike to be fair. It's very easy to panic when you go 1-0 down so early, but we got ourselves back into the game really well.

"It wasn't easy. Some of the football Crawley played was really good and the pitch wasn't easy to play on - you have to play a certain way on a pitch like that.

"But the only thing that matters in the FA Cup is to go through. I just want a home draw, that would be nice. And hopefully we can get ourselves into the next round.”

McDermott made seven changes for the game and it paid off with Garath McCleary, Jem Karacan and Danny Guthrie impressing alongside the scorers.

"We had played three Premier League games in six days - so we changed a few around today and I thought they all did really, really well,” he added.

"Ian Harte was captain. I've got so many captains out there, Pearce, Morrison, Hunt, Federici whoever you want really.

“But I told Hartey he was going to be captain and he said that it was the first time in his life he had been captain, so that was nice.

"Last year was a disappointment for us, we went out in the Third Round. We didn't want that to happen again - we wanted to make sure we got through.

"It was important for our fans that we did that. I must say, our fans were absolutely terrific today, they kept the boys going.”

The draw for the FA Cup fourth round will be made live on ITV1 on Sunday at 3.30pm.

Royals are ball No. 16 and reporter Jonny Fordham will be covering the draw, made by David Seaman and Dave Beasant, live on www.getreading.co.uk

Cav. You're a fine one to complain about anyone with opposing views to your own. At least we are not rude about it! Remember a cinderella club is a lot better than no club. If the Severn Bridge tolls are too much for you to pay, come through the Forest of Dean, its a more interesting journey anyway. I give you a wave as you pass.

Smiffy, RBC, Brighton, Forest you got to be sitting on the board with JM and Anton with concerns about spending money. No wonder the club is only going to be

Cinderella club with supporters like you. The only ambition you four have is putting people down who a different opinion to yourselves.

Smiffy, RBC, Forest, Brighton I'd like to see things from your point of view, but I can't seem to get my head that far up your back side.

I think i will take that offer up about going to see Swansea play next season. At least they will be in the premiership still next season and have ambition to stay there.

Hey Cav, I have seen a great shirt for £100. You must buy it because I like it. I don''t know if it will fit you as I have only seen it on telly. You can also pay rent(wages) on it If you find it does not fit you can flog it onto someone else next year for a fiver. Sorry, if you feel I should not be telling you how to spend your money, but you do like telling other people how to , don't you.

cav007 - I am hoping that Brian isn't reading these comments as he as better things to do, but if he does, I am sure he will take your comments seriously! It is pointless just to to mention every player that might be available unless you are suggesting that you are paying?

As Reading Fan in Brighton says, enjoy the ride and appreciate what we have rather than trying to pretend you are an expert because you won a season on Championship Manager!

Even when we win Statler & Waldorf still come on here moaning! Obviously things must be very dull in Bournemouth and Caversham today - but then again when aren't they?

Terrific fun at Crawley yesterday and memories of our third and fourth division days visiting a very small stadium and terraces etc! To all those moaners on here, appreciate just what you have got and get behind Mcd and the magnificent Royals!!!!!!

Doubt we will go beyond 3m as hammond gets a hernia at that point. We might offer milktray and a fun size mars bar. Then will they want to join? Relegation clauses needed for them too..

BCD two good players both in our price range.

Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for midfielders Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone. Spurs are unlikely to allow Huddlestone, 26, to leave on loan, but a bid of around £3m could prove successful.

So what do reckon BMD you going to consider this option??????
