Tomas Rogic set to join Reading FC

Tomas Rogic is set to join Reading after the Central Coast Mariners accepted a £400,000 bid for the midfielder.

"We have been in discussions with Reading and both clubs are fairly satisfied with what's on the table and now it's up to Tom to reach a personal agreement with Reading," said Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull.

"I am not going to say what the figure is, but there is an agreement there. Of course we don't want to see him go.

"I'd like to have Tommy here for another six years because he's a special player.

"But the reality is that quality Australian players will always want to test themselves overseas where they can command the salaries and exposure they cannot command here.

"You have seen it with the Harry Kewells, Brett Emertons, Lucas Neills, Jason Culinas and so many more over the years.

"We could keep Tom here until May when his contract expires but then he could leave for nothing, and we as a club would be out of pocket. It's a situation where our hands are really tied.

"The way things are now I would expect that things will be resolved by the end of the week concerning Tom and it may be that he will decide to stay, though considering his past association with Reading perhaps that would be unlikely."

Rogic, 20, is an attacking midfielder and made his international debut for Australia in November.

He will join fellow Aussies Adam Federici and Ryan Edwards at Madejski Stadium.

The transfer window's only just opened! Let's extend a warm welcome to Rogic and Corrico - we can't make any judgement 'til we see them play. Hopefully they're not reading some of the negative comments, though to be fair they must know they've signed for a club at the bottom end of the Prem. Including us there are at least 5 clubs in the relegation zone looking for player/s who 'will make the difference' between survival and relegation, and a wild guess says we may not be their first choice team. People are understandably miffed that 'the experienced premiership players' haven't emerged yet but it's 'early doors' as Big Ron said.

Jersey. I wholeheartedly agree that loanees are exactly the way to go in the club's current predicament, because we don't want to wind up with too many overpaid mercenaries on fat wage packets should relegation happen. I can still remember seeing a completely disinterested Fabrizio Ravanelli at EP playing for Derby some years ago.

You are, however, short changing the financial commitment that the club has already made.

The transfer fees for Gunter and Marriappa combined were reported to be £6M. That's just the transfer fee. These blokes want wages as well. 2 x 3 year contracts at say £25K/wk = another £2.5million a year. Pog's wages deal was reported as being worth £13.2M. Even if we allow for newspaper exaggeration, he must be costing between 2 and 3 million a year in wages, as will Guthrie. Even if Shorey and McLeary are playing for free (ha ha), just these figures add up to extra expenditure of £16M. (and that's just this years extra wages)

We'd all love to see our club signing world class superstars, but these superstars are inflating the wages of all footballers. Some who are not even that good are commanding silly price tags, and even dafter wages, purely because they are a squad player with a prem club.

Reading are as a corner shop in competition with Tesco and WalMart.

Jersey. You are behind the times, Arshavin has stated that he is not interested in RFC.

Big deal so we have spent just over a million on 2 players, who by the way have no premier league experience, Carrico is a good player but he has only had a handful of games this season. Rogic is a player for the future have watch a couple of videos of him and he seems a strong lad. To get us out of the position we are in at the moment we need to poach a few loan players from other premiership sides, Huddlestone is not getting his game at Spurs so he would be a good loanie. there has been talk about bringing Asharvin but we desperatley need someone who can get the ball to the front players.

These rather immediate signings are evidence that a fair bit of planning goes in to Jan transfers.

I hope these two hit the ground running, but maybe Rogic is one for the future (unless he really is THAT good) and are Premier league status has enabled us to buy him.

Looking forward to the next 3 (or so?) PL quality players coming our way.

I hope this picture of Rogic wasn't taken at the point his move to Reading was confirmed. It's the sort of expression I'd sport if forced to re-locate to Newham (double shudder).

Brighton away like the Alamo, Ray? At least we didn't all die in the end like those Texicans and Tennesseeans'and whatever Laurence Harvey was supposed to be.

This season cold be encapsulated by another Richard Widmark film - 'Murder on the Orient Express' with us in the Widmark role; comatose and cruelly despatched by our adversaries.

We need experienced pl signings if we are to have any chance. Doubt the aussie is pl fit yet or even carrico whose appearances have been limited.

Need those experienced signings in idealy by the wba game as we are running out of games already. 36 or so points seems miles off still.

   Tilehurst Ender,

You expected us to be competitive. Given the way that we ground out sometimes undeserved wins last season, (Brighton away was like The Alamo) did you really expect Reading to be that much higher up the Prem table ?

So Anton "boasted about aiming for Europe". He's been the owner for what, 8-9 months ! Crikey, are you a Chelsea fan? You know them who boo their team off the pitch less than 3 months after being crowned European Champions!

Madejski was no longer prepared to bankroll the club. His money, his decision. fair enough.

Just some things to think about, had TSI not come in.

Would Kebe have signed a new contract?

Would Roberts have been signed?

Would Brian now be manager of Reading, or Wolves?

Even if we'd managed to have been promoted without these factors, do you think that JM would have spent Millions on Gunter, Marriappa?

Could you, in your wildest dreams, ever see JM sanctioning the signing on fees and wages of Pogrebnyak and Guthrie? Shorey, McLeary?

I see things are getting personal here. ! Calm down guy's it's only a game.

Let RFC sort things out. Interested to see how these two signings will effect the team. I see Millwall want Churchie, be a good move for him..

Happy New Year to all.
