No ray of light for Reading FC at Sunderland

By Jonathan Low
December 12, 2012

Reading’s season went from bad to worse last night as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against fellow strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Brian McDermott and his players cut dejected figures at the final whistle as their survival hopes look to be in tatters, even at this stage of the season.

The result lifted Sunderland out of the relegation zone, with the Mackams breaking clear from Royals in the battle against the drop.

McDermott said on Saturday ‘doom and gloom’ lay ahead for his side – and he was not wrong.

Royals remain 19th in the Premier League table, six points from safety.

It was their fifth consecutive defeat. And with games against Arsenal and Manchester City to come, it is set to be a long hard winter for Royals.

McDermott made three changes to his side after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Southampton.

Garath McCleary, Alex Pearce and Noel Hunt were all recalled to the starting line-up, with Hal Robson-Kanu, Sean Morrison and Jason Roberts making way.

Reading got off to a catastrophic start when James McClean fired home after just two minutes.

Adam Federici could only punch Adam Johnson’s corner into the path of the midfielder, who stroked the ball home inside the near post.

For the next ten minutes Royals were under the cosh as the home side looked dangerous every time they broke forward. Seb Larsson found a gaping hole in Royals’ back line and struck his shot well, but Federici was equal to it.

Alex Pearce then had Royals’ best chance of the half when he met Nicky Shorey’s free-kick from the right, but shot agonisingly wide of the post. Frenchman Stephane Sessegnon then carved out some room on the edge of Royals’ penalty area, but shot wide.

To their credit, Brian McDermott’s side did not wilt under the constant barrage of pressure and continued to press forward, but they lacked a final ball. The tireless Jobi McAnuff worked some good positions down the right, but failed to create the required goalscoring opportunity.

And they were left to rue these misses when Steven Fletcher doubled the home side’s advantage when he delicately back-heeled the excellent Danny Rose’s cross into the bottom corner.

Adrian Mariappa was the guilty defender; having not got tight enough to the £15m Scottish striker.

Reading created several opportunities before the half ended, which saw Jay Tabb fire over from 20 yards. It demanded a strong team-talk by Brian McDermott at half-time, and Royals nearly clawed their way back into the match through left-back Nicky Shorey.

The defender hit a glorious free-kick which was heading for the top right corner, but the flying Belgian Simon Mignolet was on hand to turn it away for a corner.

The break which Royals needed still deserted them and McDermott looked on, frustrated and dejected.

As the game opened up, both sides had chances to get on the scoresheet.

McAnuff put a low cross in, but no-one was in the middle to stab home.

Noel Hunt went close with a near post header, but it was well saved by Mignolet.

With little experience on the bench to call upon, McDermott threw on teenager Dominic Samuel for a first-team debut as Royals looked for a spark.

But a dismal evening on Wearside was confirmed when Sessegnon then wrapped things up for the hosts when he broke clear and rounded Federici to roll the ball into an empty net.

Royals have a history of beginning seasons slowly and then going on to achieve great things.

But it will take a monumental effort this time around if McDermott’s side are going to be playing in the Premier League this time next year.

   I am well angry now.

As long as I can remember, fans have always questioned the finances, and why we are not able to invest in long term quality players.

Where is TSI ? Why are they silent ?

Where is that grey hair chap called Chris whatshisname from TSI ? He was all over the media in the summer, and he's AZ right hand man over here, where is he ?

Wheres the money that SJM said "AZ will take this club to the next level"

WHERE ?

The manager is responsible for assembling the squad, he is responsible for picking the team, deciding tactics and motivating the players.

Despite his past achievements, McDermott is failing in all respects this season. He started off by wasting what money he was given on poor signings (Shorey excepted) and worst of all his two biggest signings clearly don't fit his style of play and have been sidelined because of that. There is no sign that McDermott is learning - he persists with 4-4-2 despite our midfield being overrun in every game -and if anything there are clear signs that things are getting worse with players openly revolting and other indications that he is losing the dressing room.

Professional football offers handsome rewards but in return is ruthless when things go wrong. I'm really sorry but McDermott has been given time to show he can adapt and now has to go.

And if Madejski and Zingarevich have failed to give him adequate financial backing then they are equally to blame and should hang their heads in shame for letting McDermott take the blame.

There are worrying comparisons with Derby a few seasons ago. Both Reading and Derby in mid-table at Christmas and promoted too early. Billy Davies and Brian both good Championship managers.

Currently the spine of the side is just not good enough. Apart from Gorkks, Cenre Backs have potential but lack experience: Central Midfield give the ball away too much and lack crearivity.

The four players signed in the Close Season are not cutting the mustard, especially the high wage players and the tactics when we take the lead are naive. Why we still chase the game instead of packing the midfield is a mystery.

Sad day for Reading, can't remember in 50 years a more depressing feeling about MY team. Stood by BM but the interview showed a considerable failing on his man management. Guthrie, surely Rfc did research before acquiring him, or was it because he was 'cheap'? And this situation has been brewing for weeks when he has been left out and could have been useful. All makes SJMs comment this week suggest he is now past being OUR chairman. Think we need someone to come in and stabilise the situation but now seems a pointless season in many ways. Someone get a grip just to make fans feel better.

As Captain how would Phil Parkinson had dealt with Mr Guthrie.......I expect it would have been succinct and to the point :-)

I genuinely thought that Danny Guthrie would make a difference (he has but in the wrong way!) very disappointed - Need to get shot & find a player who wants the shirt. The only positive about this is that we are not having to re-coup millions in transfer fees for him.

By the way - Congratulations to Parky and Bradford last night.......

The effort and energy was there...sadly the quality was not.

The only way out of this is to rely on our home performances against those around us.

As for McD, by the sounds of the rumour mill he's had his work cut out...but if players are acting like d#cks, get rid.

Same goes for Hammond & Anton come Jan....difficult times.

Still....URZ (knowing RFC, we'll probably beat the Gooners on Monday)

Can't blame Guthrie, it was very cold and on minimum wage finding a god hotel is impossible. I am embarrassed that a club that I have supported blindly for 40 years is spiralling downward so quickly. I don' t care if we get relegated (I'd prefer to stay up though) but I want to see fighting displays, players getting stuck in, passion and grit. If we still lose fine.

There is clearly a rift in the once "Happy Camp" and at this stage there is little sense in pointing fingers until we know the real reasons behind all the problems. All we can do is support the manager who looks like he is going through a torrid time whilst trying his best to be positive- at least in public. Agree with all the comments but we are with the big boys now and difficult games are coming up as they say "thick and fast" so we have to be positive.

Good luck Brian.

OK got to admit I only watched the highlights on Sky last night...BUT..having been a Reading supporter since the early 60's My son and Daughter and Granddaughter regular attendees..I have to say that was one off the worst performances a Reading team could have given. No cohesion no team work total inept performance all round. Does no one know how to tackle , how to cross a ball or even pass it. The number of times they made toe or three simply passes and then just played it to no one or a Sunderland player was a joke . No one running into spaces Nothing To be honest we where lucky it was only 3 - 0. With this sort off performances we would not even survive in the Championship. So someone at the club MUST come out and say what's the plan for the next few months. Don't come out and say we will be spending 2,3 or even 20 million cause other clubs will just up the asking price. Come out and say yes there is a problem X,Y and Z are unhappy and why.. Name names and get the fans back on side It's obvious Reading play low wages compared to most CHAMPIONSHIP sides, so if one or two are being treated different isn't it about time they showed WHY they are worth more. Back to last nights game if I picked the team for the next game only three off those yesterday would be in it, Pearce, Shorey and Tabb Rant over and not really looking forward to Division 1 in 18 months

If this "not of the right mind" thing was a one off incident, then I suspect the club would have dealt with it quietly, internally.

What is becoming clear, though, is that there is a pattern emerging. Mystery, unspecified "injuries" preventing Guthrie from playing, being told to stay away from the training ground, being on the bench, then not deployed, the twitter thing, etc. I'd be very surprised to see Guthrie ever play in a Reading shirt again whilst Brian remains manager.

What's more concerning to me though, is to see Roberts being forsaken completely, in favour of kids being put on the bench last night. This does seem to suggest that the disharmony is spreading, and it's affecting performances.

Regarding the Guthrie situation, I back McD all the way. This so called player has come in, starts throwing his toys out the pram, disrespects the manager and the team with irresponsible comments on twitter, against a manager that got us promoted and has been a loyal servant to the club. Guthrie (and all players) need to think, people are dying in this world and they need to be a little more humble and get on with it. No wonder Pardew got rid of him !

Surely the most recent example is Matt Mills, when he so very ploitely flipped the bird to all us in the East Stand?

Again purely because of squad size he was pretty much undroppable so an apology followed by some good performances seemed enough for some.

Another example of McDermott rubbing a player up the wrong way perhaps?

bloody hell! Brian needs to sort it out and Zingaravich needs to keep his promise and spend some proper money. We need new players, END OF! And Guthrie - what an idiot!

And whats going to happen if and when Guthrie plays...possibly Monday?

Are the fans going to boo him? or get behind him as we need anything and everything we've got to get out of this mess?

I know I'm in two minds.......
