Reading FC Keeper Alex McCarthy out for season

By Jonny Fordham
November 29, 2012

Alex McCarthy's shoulder injury will force him to miss the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper saw a specialist yesterday and was advised he needs an operation after clattering into a post during Reading’s 1-1 draw with QPR on November 4.

He tweeted last night: “On route back home from London, was expecting the outcome with the specialist. Surgery on Monday my season over!

#Raging”.

Jem Karacan (knee) misses Saturday's home game against Manchester United and Jimmy Kebe (groin) is a major doubt, but Danny Guthrie

(thigh) has a chance of being involved.

   In the words of Blackadder

"I think the term rhymes with clucking bell..."

Granted he seemed to still have sun-tan lotion in his gloves back in August/September, I think its more the defence that have been at fault than Fedders in recent games. The marking for Everton and Wigan's goals was shocking!

At least we have Mikkel and the experience of Taylor on stand-by...

Bas news for Alex and Reading FC both. No offence to Feds, but I think Alex is more consistent and a better shot stopper. What's the latest news with Mikkel Anderson and the chap from Man City?

Sad news for Alex - Hope he gets it all sorted.

Strange how the most innocuous challenges, slips & falls turn out to be so serious.

Make a speedy recovery Alex! He has been great for us this season. IF we could borrow Friedel he'd be straight in at No 1, though hopefully Feds will do well in the meantime.

Sad news for a player, who along with Shorey, Morrison and Roberts, has been our only only source of encouragement. Best wishes to Alex for a full, and let's hope, relatively smooth recovery.

Dog Leg - We couldn't afford Friedel.

You just never know what going to happen!

Best of luck with the recovery Alex.

We must have upset Murphy somewhere along the line as "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong".

Reading desperately need a proven Premier League keeper to aid survival. Would Friedel come on loan seeing as Lloris has stepped up?

Interesting that just after midday today he tweeted that he was going to see a second specialist - so maybe not a foregone conclusion.

So sad for our brilliant young keeper. Now have to hope Feds can perform at the top of his game all season and that Mikkel is elevated to number 2 ahead of Taylor.
