McDermott admires work of Wigan boss

Brian McDermott says he is full of admiration for his opposite number this weekend.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has been in charge of the Latics since 2009, after a successful spell in charge of Swansea City in the Championship.

Royals’ manager said the Spaniard is someone he and other managers, who take their teams up from the Championship, can look up to.

McDermott said: “I think the manager is a good benchmark for managers of promoted sides.

“I learned a lot from him.

“I watched his interviews last season when they were struggling and I thought he was first class.

“He spoke really well, he never got himself too down and never got too high.”

Martinez has led his side to Premier League survival over the past three seasons, despite enduring poor starts to each season.

He led them to successive 16th place positions in his first two seasons, and a 15th place finish last year.

And McDermott added: “I think the manager is a really good benchmark for managers in a tricky situation.

“I really like him, he’s very bright, articulate and he’s done a great job.”

A win at the DW tomorrow would move Reading on to 12 points from 12 games, and they would also leapfrog their opponents.

Meanwhile, the Royals boss, who wore a suit for the first time on the touchline at the Madesjki Stadium in last Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Everton, said he will be wearing one again.

Since the win was Reading’s first in the league of the season, it has been seen by some as a lucky charm.

And McDermott said: “I thought I’m 51 so maybe I’m too old to wear a tracksuit! But I will wear one tomorrow.

“Jobi McAnuff said ‘you look good gaffer’ so I said thanks!"
