Newcastle United defender on Reading FC's radar

By Jonny Fordham
July 04, 2012

Newcastle United contract rebel Danny Simpson is a target for Reading.

And Royals new boy Danny Guthrie would have no qualms in recommending defender Simpson to his new manager.

Brian McDermott is on the look-out for a right-back to bolster his squad and the Magpies are open to offers for 25-year-old Simpson, who has just 12 months to run on his current contract and could be available for between £1.5 and £2million.

Guthrie said: “If I was asked by the manager here for my thoughts then I would tell him how good a footballer he is and how he always gives his best for the team.”

Matthew Connolly and his 32-year-old QPR team-mate Luke Young are also Royals targets, while Werder Bremen’s Poland international defender Sebastian Boenisch and Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga have also been linked with the club.

   "Contract Rebel???? No Thanks!!!!!"

I don't think he is much of a 'contract rebel', it's a pretty unfair term quite frankly. If anything he is to be admired for having the desire to play football and not just take a cheque and warm the bench.

I thought it was as 'confirmed' as anything ever really is in football. I'm sure it made it's way into the annals of Wikipedia at some point, though that's a way away from fact.

Either way though, I'd take your point that any player who is willing to publicly go against the wishes of the club who effectively owns them, should come with warning signs.

@U U G: Was that ever confirmed that Kebe did that? I thought it was just a "terrace theory?"

Fordham is someone winding you up? Maiga's a contract rebel and Boenisch hardly impressed at the Euro's and apparently was deemed so bad his parent club withdrew their contract offer!

Though Kebe pretty much did the same thing to get a contract with us (going on strike).

Just had a read up on that Maiga fellow... no thanks! Sounds like another Fae, as he apparently refused to play for his club outright (never mind reserves) because his apparent move to Newcastle didn't go through. Pretty good goal record granted, but I'd rather not have a striker in the ranks who'll need his ego massaged more than he'll score.
