Bryn Gunnarsson wants to stay at Reading FC

By Jonny Fordham
April 24, 2012

Bryn Gunnarsson has denied rumours that he is to quit Reading and return to Iceland this summer.

Gunnarsson will become the second Reading player in the squad, alongside Adam Federici, to pick up his second Championship winners medal on Sunday.

The 36-year-old has made just four appearances this season and is out of contract in the summer.

However, despite reports circulating in his home country the midfielder is keen to stay on at Madejski Stadium where he has been for nearly seven years.

When asked about his future, Gunnarsson said: "There is no situation as such.

"It would be fantastic to stay here, if that becomes a possibility I would definitely consider that. If not, then I'll take a few weeks out and see where where things go.

"You always want to play, whether it's in the Premier League or not. As this season progressed I enjoyed it in a different way. I wasn't playing much, but was still involved indirectly and I enjoyed it.

"I finished my UEFA B on Thursday and passed that with no problems. It's something I'm still looking into, but at the same time, I want to play for as long as I can.

"Being a player/coach, I don't think that would suit me. It's either or. There is uncertainty, but I'll take things as they come."

Agree with the other comments - a playing slot for Bryn is unlikely. Great memories though. Who can forget his nutmeg at Liverpool in the cup, or that blistering shot at the Mad stad against Man Utd which hit the bar - I think it's still shaking!

If I'm not mistaken I know Fedders had just joined us back in 2005 after we tried out Kelvin Jack but I don't think he got a medal from the 2005/06 campaign. I think the keepers who walked away with medals that time round were Marcus and one Graham Stack. Fedders may have made the bench a few times but I seem to remember him being loaned out to Maidenhead or someone that season.

As for Bryn, his influence in putting Brighton in their place was nothing short of brilliance. A game which I think contributed more to giving us belief than the West Ham game. I'll also never forget how again he kept us in check against Man City in the Cup last season. But a guy hardly getting a look in and going on 37 in a restricted 25-man-squad. Sorry Bryn but I think you'll be more of a passenger than the away fans on the STAR coaches next season.

If you can tutor a few of the academy boys into being younger Bryn clones I'd be more than happy!

@ LarryS, football league rules on medals are: 23 medals are given to the winning club, 18 for players, 1 for the club secretary/administrator, 1 for the manager, 1 for the Physio and 2 for other non playing staff members. Additional medals can be given by consent of the executive.

I can't honestly see Bryn playing first team football for us again and not sure if handing our Wether's Originals on the bench is a full time job.

As for re-signing Doyle? A legend but lets move on...I'd rather take Fletcher off Wolves .

Interesting, i thought BMD bringing him on with 10mins to go on Saturday was to say goodbye to the fans. Agree with other comments, he wont be any use on the pitch next season. Who wants a bet Mr Doyle will be wearing a Reading shirt again next season?

Would be the perfect coach for the reserve team and move up to res team manager after some experience. Also good links to Iceland for future youngsters to follow

We he get a medal? There are only so many given out and Bryn only made one start this season and a couple of sub appearances.

dont think he has the legs for the premier league (or the championship), but i think he would be a really good person to have on the coaching team, and represents everything RFC stands for.

Great servant for the club, had a great career but not a prem league player - sorry Bryn.

TWO championship medals, got to be happy with that! Good luck with the future, who know's, that could be a RFC coach or manager one day.....
