McDermott may move for Kightly, but not Mackail-Smith

By Jonny Fordham

Reading are monitoring the situation of Wolves winger Michael Kightly, but a move for Craig Mackail-Smith is not on the cards.

Injured Kightly has missed the cut for Mick McCarthy’s 25-man squad as he is still fighting a chronic inflammation of the patella tendons.

He could be back in action within the month, allowing him to move to Madejski Stadium on loan until January, but the 24-year-old said he won’t rush his return.

“This is a serious injury and one which is complex to deal with,” said the former non-league star.

“Any setback is disappointing, but it’s something I’ve learned to cope with over the last year or so. I’m ready to give it as long as it takes, but when I do get fit again it would be good to get out on loan.

“I’m staying positive and carrying on with the rehab without any pressure on when I need to be fit again.

“Once I wasn’t going to be ready it was always going to be the right decision not to be included in the 25. The gaffer needed players who he knew would be available to him.

“If the loan was to happen, then by January I could be ready to challenge for a place here.”

Elsewhere, reports linking Royals with a deadline day bid for Peterborough United forward are not true, the Post can reveal.

Boss Brian McDermott was interested in bringing the forward to Reading at the end of last season, but he has since cooled his interest in him.

However, McDermott is still open to bringing in new faces after the £7million sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

He added: “We’re still in the frame if something comes our way, we can do it now because of Gylfi. We’re watching closely to see what happens.

“We did make an offer for somebody else. We were close but we couldn’t do it and we missed out.

"I can’t say who, but we know who is available and won’t bring in a player in haste. We know the market.”

Bucket boy you still trying to be wannabe with writing in this comment space. Have you got anything good to say about anybody???????????? Everyone i see here gets a knock back from you, it must be rather sad to sit by the computer all day and just put people down. By the way putting coppell in and getting rid of Dicky Hammond would be the best thing since sliced bread. JM bring back coppell and give him the job lol.

Please dont trust the opinion of Expom. Its doubtful he has ever seen a Reading game.

Just another WUM. Possibly a Wolves fan.

McD would be looking for a striker why not try and get O'Grady from Rochdale only 24 years of age could get him on the cheap. Not bad holds the ball well and can pass the ball off pretty well and he has got a bit of pace with t. Link him up with someone like Kightly if they can get him on loan or play him up from front with Noel and it could be a pretty good combination up front. But how we look at it and give names of players to choose from, its McD's call at the end of the day who he wants and gets.

This would be quite a good move for kites, as he's head and shoulders above anyone playing for the plastic Royals at the moment. Also, nice to see our feeder club arrangement working both ways. We have a few academy lads who may be able to help Reading stay up this season.

My only real worry is, that the famous Reading bottler mentality rubs off on Kites. Still fingers crossed that it's a success for all concerned!

Oh great! We're interested in adding yet another injured player to the squad who might, if we are very lucky, be fit within a month i.e. by October and then could go again in January!! That's really building for stability! Mickey Mouse really does wear a RFC watch!

No Expom, not a fan or a stalker. Just someone else who is tired of reading the uninformed drivel you post on here from the other side of the planet.

lots of noise on this from Wolves - Kightly is 4 or 5 weeks from fitness (apparently!) perhaps McD is looking for more cover on the wings or thinks Kightly can fill another role? Striker required to give Reading another option - target man - Akinbiyi/Roberts that sort perhaps?

Very good choice indeed McD Knightly is. Thats one thing McD has got with his sophisticated selection of players, he looks for certain qualities in them. JM get rid of NH and replace him with Coppell that would bring some good stability and confidence that is needed at the moment in that area of the club. I have seem to have picked up a fan or may be a stalker?????????

kighly is a good player and could play the role left by sig, but if he's not fit the timing can't be right as the club keep banging on about, so surely a big target man up front in the kitson mould is more the problem.

There are plenty of good choices of players out there at the moment, McD would have a good selection to dip into. Knightly is a very choice of player never know he might up staying if he comes to Reading.

Good player, but he's not going to be fit till Nov/Dec and he'll be going back to Wolves in Jan. I see little value in this unless Kightly isn't goling to feature for Wolves for the rest of the season (shrewd move by McD?).

Striker please Brian...and a creative midfielder.

Why couldn’t the supposed move have been made a couple of days earlier??? Same old same old… just miss out sounds like they are trying to keep the fans thinking they are re investing but not actually doing it!

They would have had cash to do something especially when they were almost certain they would have sold one of our top players!!!

Roll on the lone stragglers! Knightly will be a good shout but how much good is he if he’s not fit!!! I’m sure if he was that good and due to return within the month McCarthy would have included him? Yet another dead lead!!!

Come on McDermott surprise us all and unveil Jason Roberts, Tamir Cohen, Simon Cox and Nile Ranger on season long loans!!!

Kightly is a good player, I know, but why are we looking at wingers when clearly we need a good striker. Perhaps if McDermott looked at www.givemefootball.com he would see the strikers that are available on a free transfer. Failing that, look at LeFondre at Rochdale, Brian.
