Chris Armstrong to return after 13-month injury lay-off

By Jonny Fordham
September 03, 2010

Chris Armstrong looks set to make his comeback in a behind-closed-doors friendly for Reading next week after 13 months out injured.

Royals boss Brian McDermott is hoping to arrange a match at Hogwood Park and Armstrong is likely to feature for the first time since the club’s 5-1 win over Burton Albion in the Carling Cup in August 2009.

It had been feared that the 28-year-old left-back would be forced to retire after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury that plagued his five years at Sheffield United.

However, if he makes a full recovery then it will be a massive boost for Reading.

Club captain Ivar Ingimarsson could also feature as he continues his recovery after tearing a hamstring in March.

McDermott said: “We’re just trying to sort something out for next week so we can have a look at some guys who haven’t played for a while.

“I’m confident Chris will be ready and that Ivar can also play some part.”

Noel Hunt is also expected to be given a full 90 minutes, while trialist Lee Hendrie will hope to impress.

However, Ian Harte is unlikely to take part as he is already up to speed following his midweek move from Carlisle.

New No.2 goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could start between the sticks after being recalled from his recent loan spell at Brentford.

Royals are without a match this weekend due to the international break.

“He’s a good pro and will be a big addition to the squad we have already. I remember watching him when I was growing up as well.”

i would send him out on loan til christmas, then when he is fit with games under his belt bring him back in, it would be like having a new signing

Armstrong is a very good player and it will be great to see him back. Let's hope he can say fit. Best of luck Chris.

May be with a good couple of games under his belt and he will come right, just needs the game time to improve for game fitness.

Not sure that either player will be the same after such lenthly lay offs which is a shame as both decent players. Last few times I saw Ivar play I though that he had lost a yard of pace. Mills (when fit) and Zurab would now be my first choice pairing at centre back. I never really been that convinced about Pearce but he's young and still learning so fingers crossed will improve with a 2nd season in the team if he get's the chance of course. I think Harte is a decent signing and good cover for £100K.

Definitely a welcome return and will give the team a massive boost once match fit and hopefully no recurrence of the injury.

Can't wait for the 11th now!!!!!

Agree with you both, quality player when fit. I hope this injury hell he has been through is the last in his professional career.

It would be great if he could get back - he is a quality left back - hope it goes well for him..

Would be a great boost if Armstrong did return, but obviously major doubts that he will hence Harte being signed.
