Lee Hendrie is training with Reading as boss Brian McDermott gives the former England international the chance to revive his career.
The 33-year-old ex-Aston Villa midfielder played on loan at League One Brighton at the back end of last season.
McDermott said: “We’ll have a look at Lee over a period of two or three weeks. He’s very fit and hungry. If you put this boy in the right position then something could happen.
“I’ve got a good feeling about this and I hope it goes well for him. He’s a player who plays off the striker and in between the lines. He feels he can play at this level still and he could be quite exciting for us.”
Royals’ boss denied trying to sign Leicester striker Matty Fryatt yesterday, but revealed the club made enquiries about another forward.
McDermott added: “We made an offer for someone else. We know who’s available, but I won’t act on haste.”
A week today Royals will check out the Premier League players left out of their club’s 25-man squads.
Ex-Reading and Swindon striker Simon Cox could be available on loan if he fails to feature in Roberto Di Matteo’s first-team plans at West Brom.
