Flight not fancied by plane-shy Church
By Matthew SadlerMarch 19, 2010
Simon Church admits he is not relishing flying up to Middlesbrough for tomorrow’s game (3pm kick-off), but it still beats sitting next to former flat-mate Gylfi Sigurdsson on the coach.
Royals will ditch their usual mode of transport for the 436-mile round trip and 21-year-old Church revealed he takes after Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp in not enjoying taking to the skies.
He said: “I struggle in planes. We flew to Blackpool earlier on in the season in a propeller plane and I have a thing about those.
“It was fine in the end and it is so much better flying rather than sitting next to Gylfi on a coach for six hours.
“I just try not to be sick and shut my eyes for the whole trip. I know a lot of people that don’t like flying.”
Royals go into tomorrow’s game with mid-table Boro on the back of four successive league wins and belief is soaring within the squad, according to the Wales international.
Church said: “Confidence is very high at the moment. The last couple of home games we have had, we have put in very good perfromances and got a good couple of results as well.
“We are not thinking about the play-offs. We are looking at the next game and getting as high up the table as we can.
“This league crazy. It’s so tight that with a couple of wins you could push right up the table so these wins have helped us massively.
“I’ve never set myself a target because if you don’t meet it then you feel like you have had a bad season. I just try to score every game and as long as we keep on winning that is all that matters.”
Church has netted eight goals in the Championship this season and added a further two in the FA Cup.
He said: “I didn’t set any targets at the beginning of the season. I wanted to reach double figures, but now I want to push on and get as many as I can and catch Gylfi up.
“There is always a bit of banter between me and him. He is getting the penalties, but I will let him off this time because he is one of the best penalty-takers I have ever seen.
“As soon as he misses I will be on his back, same as Longy.
“We are all scoring goals. It’s not just me and Gylfi. Shane, Grzegorz and Jimmy are all chipping in and that is the reason we are pushing up the table.”
Church has been forced to settle for a place on the bench for the last three games.
He said: “You want to play every game and as a striker you want to score goals no matter what.
“You are always disappointed if you are not playing.
“But Brian has got everything right so far and we are picking up results. All the strikers are behind each other and we all want each other to do well.
“There is no moaning going on and we are all in the same situation.”

If Simon don't like sitting next to Gylfi, I'm sure there are plenty of fans who would only be too glad to swap places with Simon :)

Where is he by the way?
Who cares if Church doesn't like flying. what has this got to do with anything?
These EP hacks are worthless. Start asking the players sensible/serious questrions like about their fitness regime, or how they perceive weeknesses in the opposition, or their views on the 'long ball', or what new methods are being undertaken in training by McD etc etc, rather than this drivvel.
This is absolute pointless rubbish.
