Federici keeping cool over wins

By Jonny Fordham
November 27, 2009

Adam Federici would happily go to Derby County and freeze if it meant Reading came back with all three points and a clean-sheet.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper has had little time to feel the cold in recent performances as he has certainly been kept on his toes.

But with the cold weather closing in and the hats and gloves coming out during training at Hogwood Park already, the Australian international would rather it was him reaching for the thermals.

He joked: “You’ll probably see a few pairs of gloves from the players now, but I should be getting the extra clothing out, not them!

“With the games we’ve been having lately I’ve always been warm, but I’d take a cold evening not doing anything with a clean sheet any day.”

Federici hasn’t managed to keep a clean-sheet in any of Reading’s last 11 games.

However, unlike at the start of the season when the players’ heads dropped after going a goal behind, he believes they now have a completely different attitude when the opposition score.

And with the dreaded 10-month winless home record now off their backs, Federici said he always tried to not let the barren run slip into his head before games.

“For myself, it was the last thing I thought about,” explained the 6ft 2ins stopper.

“The only thing I would think about is making sure my game is in place, but then you would come to do an interview and get reminded about it.

“Hopefully we can push on now and continue to look forward and up the table.

“The Championship is so up and down at the moment, though, and there’s no easy teams – so we can’t go to Derby thinking that.

“It’s going to be a tough game, any away game is, but we’re all looking forward to it and are confident of going up there and getting the result.”

With Reading sitting in 20th place and the Championship table looking as tight as ever, Federici also refused to rule out any push for the play-offs after playing just 17 games in the season.

He added: “You need a goal at the end of the season and we’ve always had that ambition of getting promoted.

“You can’t just play for the sake of playing, we need something to chase and it’s realistic and definitely in our sights and we want that more than anything.

“So promotion is a good thing to be chasing.”
