Brendan Rodgers wants more firepower

November 13, 2009

Brendan Rodgers admits he is still looking to strengthen Reading’s mis-firing attack.

Royals missed numerous chances in last Saturday’s draw with Ipswich and in the 1-0 defeat to Leicester City three games ago.

And with Noel Hunt already ruled out for the season, Rodgers revealed he is keen to get reinforcements in.

He said: “I certainly think we need to help the players in that area.

“Gzregorz Rasiak gives us a different dimension because of his height and has scored goals at this level.

“Churchy, who is going to a very good player for the future, is in his first full season, Noel is probably out for the majority of the season and Shane is someone who has been injured and who over the last couple of seasons has made an impact from the bench.

“I think we are creating chances and I have big confidence in the players here, but you need help on the way and something that brings maybe a different dimension to the team as well.”

One area where Rodgers doesn’t feel the squad needs improving is at right-back, despite left-footed midfielder Jay Tabb currently occupying the position.

“Jay has been superb since I came in here,” he said.

“He has played a number of games in centre-midfield and that will be his preferred position, but he is the type of player who is multi-functional. He can play well in a number of positions.

“Jay was great away at Coventry and he filled in and did well against Ipswich.

“He is a solid player and we are just having to make sure we defend solid as a team. Then when we get the chances because of the creativity in our team we need to take them.

With more than a third of the season gone Reading lie in the Championship relegation zone and Rodgers admits he is still some distance away from having the squad he desires.

“The squad is still in transition,” he explained.

“I think we have a good squad here, but I always want to improve.

“I felt coming into the job that it would probably take two or three transfer windows before I would have what I would consider to be my group of players.

“That’s not to say the players here now won’t be here. I came here in the summer and I had to replace players that have gone and because of the economical market now we are not going to have the same funds we had before.

“I know we have a good squad here, but I will always be looking where we can improve it.”

With a large proportion of Reading’s squad away on international duty, training has been more relaxed at Hogwood this week and Rodgers believes that working with a smaller squad will be beneficial in the long run.

He said: “We have a lot of the squad away, but those here will be training and working hard to top up their fitness levels.

“I like to have the training relaxed and focussed and there are very few times during the season where players get the chance to train with a lower intensity. It’s important that they can come in and have fun as well.

“Because the focus isn’t on a game at the weekend then you can do other things and also work on individual techniques as well.

“It’s a balance that gives us more opportunity to work with a smaller group and work to their needs.”

I thought that Rasiak was the answere to our prayers according to this idiot of a manager we have. He couldn,t score for Southampton, so why does he think he can score for Reading. Its the same for Mcnuff, runs down the wing, head down no idea where he is going, so will someone please open the gates and he can go straight down to the tip. Why does Rodgers think the lad from Huddersfield will want to come here, we have nothing to offer him that he cant achieve at Huddersfield they are probably coming up and who is to say we are not going down. For Christ sake Madjeski sack Rodgers now before its to late,as stated by Johnny 5 he is all mouth and no substance Benji Reading

See that Church scored for Wales yesterday and then came off at half time. Please tell me he isn't injured as well...............

Wasn't having a go at Tabb who at least tries. World class manager was the target!

"The wheel's still turning, but the donkey ran off. " Brilliant comment Meldrew - certainly made me laugh. I was going to add that the wheel has come off and is rolling aimlessly backwards downhill....

Sorry Pete50, but I actually like Tabb, just a shame he is so short. Agree that he isn't a right back though, why not play Mills there or he is on a "pay as you play" deal......?

Simon Cox ? Wayne Rooney ? (Ooppp's sorry can't afford him) Leroy Lita, If given the chance to play regularly.

I'm in Minnesota and watch your comments with a smile on my face. I'm an old Elm Park boy. Never had these discussions then. Mind you we never went so long without a home win either. Have faith guy's the wheel is still turning.

If this idiot gets a forward he probably won't play him. As for Tabb he is clearly finished - "superb" , "great" and "well" are way short of the rest of the World Class squad. JM just have the guts to spend a bit of money starting with Buck's pay off.

Meldrew, even if he had, it would have been confiscated and added to the Chairman's cloth cutting fund.

The only firepower that he's likely to be able to afford is a box of matches.

Dear Mr Rodgers. Have you found a sack of money left on the roof of a footballer's car?

pinju - the way things are done now is to sign a player on loan and make him permanent when the window opens, its called signing on loan with the view to permanent transfer and the fee is pre determined - ring any bells, like kitson last year

I thought the different dimension was that he is rubbish in comparison to most league strikers??

Easier said than done. Clubs that will want to sell can't until January and some won't want a player to go out on loan. If we want a striker, we will have to wait until he's available. Another 'easy target' to beat Rodgers with - I think so.

Just get a striker in and stop waffling on about it.....all talk and no action Rodgers. We desperately need a new forward, none of ours can hit a barn door, hence the 3 goals at home and only 15 in total! (although Church will be good in a few years time!).
