Royals were well-beaten by arch rivals Swindon in a reserve game at Madejski Stadium yesterday afternoon.
Nigel Gibbs’ team included first-team regulars Jem Karacan in midfield and Shane Long up front.
Right-back Shaun Cummings played a full 90 minutes, as did keeper Ben Hamer and Academy stars Jake Taylor and Abdulai Bell-Baggie.
Town took the lead on 16 minutes through Charlie Austin and the striker doubled his personal tally for the day in the 80th minute.
Billy Paynter chipped in with the other two strikes for the visitors including one from the penalty spot shortly before half-time.
Substitute Mitchell Bryant bagged a consolation goal for Royals just before the final whistle.
