Federici: errors are costing Reading FC

By Jonny Fordham
October 19, 2009

Adam Federici feels Reading are making too many individual errors costing them precious points in the Championship after they threw away a 1-0 lead at West Brom.

The Australian goalkeeper was caught out after a calamitous back-pass by Jobi McAnuff forced him to rush out of his goal to challenge Jerrome Thomas.

But Thomas came off on top and scored West Brom’s equaliser before bagging another for the Baggies in their 3-1 win at the Hawthorns.

With Royals remaining in 21st place with just 10 points from 12 games and facing a tough trip to 10th placed QPR tomorrow night (kick-off 7.45pm), the 24-year-old has also called for greater focus.

He said: “It sums up our season really- we play good for ten minutes and then everyone just packs up and goes home. We’ve got to change and play for 90 minutes.

“The first against West Brom was a bad goal to concede and then we let them back into it when it was there for us to win, I just don’t know why we didn’t pick ourselves up and carry on.

“We need to cut down on individual errors- the first goal was shocking and I’m sure Jobi feels terrible about it.

“It was a simple pass but it goes astray. It went through my mind if I should bring him (Thomas) down or let him have an easy shot at goal.

“So I tried to make it hard for him at least and make a lunge without bringing him down so I wouldn’t get sent off, It was a tough decision to make.”

Federici continued: “But even then we were still in the game at 1-1, but we just seemed to go home.

“I don’t know how to solve it, we all talk good in the dressing room and come out well, still three goals again Is a horrible feeling.

“When we go down confidence is an issue, but we all need to put our chests out and carry on when we do.”

QPR thrashed sixth placed Preston 4-0 in London on the weekend and Federici knows that Reading need to re-group quickly for the trip to West London.

He added: “They’re a great side and there aren’t many easy games in the Championship so we need to pick ourselves up very quickly and play for a full 90 minutes.

“If we do that then we could beat teams three or four nil, but we just haven’t got that consistency together at the moment.”

Two errors from you Fed on Saturday cost us two goals so you're probably right that errors are costing us dearly. However players make mistakes in every team at every level(look at Ferdinand and Carragher lately) and that doesn't excuse the fact that the team are playing poorly with badly designed tactics and a squad that has rock bottom morale.

Brendon needs to re-assess his tactics and switch us back to 4-4-2, work out who our best team are and push SJM and NH to invest in the squad in January. I am not saying spend, spend, spend for promotion but we are in a very precarious position right now and a small gap is opening up to the teams above us - we can't afford to be in a relegation scrap all season. If you can't manage to do all that Brendon just let the club know and we'll find someone else who can.

Rather than run through the video footage I think it's about time that Sal Bibbo got the boot. If he's supposed to be a goalkeeping coach then all I can say is he's not very good at it. Time to de-select one of the weakest links methinks.

I do hope that Sal Bibbo is going to run through the video footage with you Federici. Then you might realise that your (incorrect)decision making also had an awful lot to do with that first goal (and maybe the third too).

Feds was definitely one of our better players on Saturday, and kept the score respectable. On the other hand Jobi had a mare (but at least he looks semi decent usually). Cummings on the other hand looked no better than a poor pub player. How he wasn't subbed defies belief!

In agreement with those who have talked about a press ban on the players maybe with the exception of the more experienced players such as Ingimarrson and Gunnarsson.

Also agree with Compo that Hamer should get a chance as No.1

Maybe with two months to go before the transfer window the scouts should be looking at a centre half who has pace.....teams have worked out by now Reading have no pace through the middle.

NOT INDIVUAL ERRORS FEDS - YOU ARE ONLY A SQUAD PLAYER AT THIS LEVEL. UNFORTUNATELY YOU CAN'T PERFORM CONSISTANTLY, OK YOU MAY PULL OFF SOME WORLD CLASS SAVES BUT YOUR POSITIONING AND THE WAY YOU DON'T DOMINATE YOUR BOX MAKES YOU A LEAGUE 1 PLAYER. AND THE MERE FACT THAT YOU LET IN ON AVERAGE A GOAL A GAME, THAT IN SOME WAY IS YOUR ERROR. SORRY, THATS MY OPINION. BUT AS A BLOKE YOU ALWAYS COME ACROSS AS A REALLY NICE LAD

The main error is the manager. Didn't even need one of his fantasy clean sheets, just letting in one would have given us a point. He's the most expensive fall guy JM has bought, but let him fall now while we still have time to save our Championship status.

Too many errors A Fed. Time to give Hamer a chance i think, not as if he doesn't change the centre backs constantly anyway!

At least Federici has been frank and honest, Brendan Rodgers take note. He's only one step away from naming & shaming, about time someone spoke some truths out of Reading FC rather than flowering it up.

I agree with Loyal Royal83.....press ban until the end of the year, then let the players reflect on what they have done...no distractions, just training and matches.

I thought the same in the last few months of the last season....the big talk off the pitch has no correlation with the pathetic performance on it.

The only problem is that I wouldnt have anything to read about!

i still stand by my prediction that he wont be in the team after xmas, time to wake up and realise feds is only a league 1 keeper along with half the team. we must look at bringing in a new keeper and striker but most of all a new manager

To be fair to Federici he kept the score down in the 2nd half with some oustanding saves from Albion players.
