West Bromwich Albion 3 Reading FC 1

By Jonny Fordham
October 17, 2009

Reading travel to the Hawthorns this afternoon to take on second placed West Brom and you can follow all the action LIVE with Royals reporter Jonny Fordham.

Brendan Rodgers' team are in desperate need of some points after picking up just two wins from 11 games so far in the Championship were they are in 21st place.

Jonny writes: Reading's home form has struggled- but they have played better away from home so far this season.

Reading born and bred Simon Cox will be hoping to upset the club he supported as a boy if he starts and West Brom have an abundance of quality at this level regardless.

For that reason I think the home team will take all three points on offer, edging it with a 1-0 win.

THE TROUBLE IS NOONE UNDERSTANDS THE TACTICS AND FORMATION - OK WHEN YOU HAVE 20 FORIEGN MULTI MILLION POUNDS INTERNATIONALS WHO ARE PLAYING AGAINST 20 FORIEGN MULTI MILLION POUNDS INTERNATIONALS THAT WILL GIVE YOU TIME ON THE BALL, NOT DIVE IN WITH A FULL BLOODED TACKLE OR STAND OFF AND NOT CLOSE YOU DOWN. BUT IN THIS DIVISION YOU HAVEN'T THE TIME OR SPACE TO DO THAT. TA DA RODGERS - JUST TURN THE LIGHT OFF IN YOUR OFFICE BEFORE YOU GO, MIGHT SAVE SJM A LITTLE ON ELECTRIC

It is just about as dismal as it gets. The Royals lose again. Once again it is a second-half disaster (has Tim Dellor got a point when he questions the fitness of the team and the method of their training?). And once again fans queue up on this website to say it really isn't that bad!

I thought Reading played ok at Albion. Losing to the best side in the division is no disgrace. Having sold all their best players this is a re-building phase for Reading. More patience is required.

Great point. Where was Marek? Unless he has had his right leg removed he should play every week. Thought Brendan would have loved his style. Brave, always wants the balls. Progressive, always looking for a pass forward. Crazy. I'm was a BR fan and feel sorry for him but he must be the only man in the world to prefer Howard over Marek. If Marek was to play every game between now and Xmas 1, we would be a lot better side and 2, we will get more money for him when Hammond demands he is sold in January.

WE don't seem to be even playing as a team, no-one appears able to rely on the next man, so we get pulled everywhere. Just painful. Argued Brendam should be given time, but we aren't making ANY progress - something is lacking with the coaching.

Madeski has to get ready of Rodgers now he an inexperience manager who not up to the job and for some one like him to come in under the sucess we had we Coppell he not up for it. The worst start that i seen for many years. I really do wonder what Coppell would be thinking right now to see a sucess side he built dismantled and the club in dissray. Get ready of Rodgers and start again bring in some one with experoence and i can do attuide and some one with no excuses

well if Rodgers is still in charge after this game it going to be a battle for surival and coppells efforts have been wasted by the board at Reading to bring a manager who can't live up to Coppell and deliver us Premiership football. Madeski will have to responsabilty for this season as it been a shocker start to the seaon Bring in a experience manager and some one who knows what the fans and club expect not some one who planning for the future we live for the here and now

What a terrible shame. What goes around comes around Brenda....I feel sorry for Reading fans but i am loving your complete and utter failure. The funny thing is we are all glad your gone now. Royals get rid of this clown as he will take you down...Loser.

Football is fairly unique in that the consequences of the team's failure usually results in the predictable sacking of the manager. We already have fans calling for Rodgers' dismissal, and unless there is a major turn round in results, I fully expect that they will get their wish. I am not in any way an apologist for Brenda, but I believe that the quality of players at his disposal is ultimately determined by budgetary decisions taken by the Chairman. Players that command bigger salaries and appearance bonuses are being overlooked, (Matty) or farmed out to see their contracts out elsewhere (Rosenior, Harper). Cheaper replacements are being shown up to be exactly that, and couple that with a manager who doesn't know his best team, and all the ingredients for failure are in place. Maybe success spoils you, but in the 40 years I have followed the club, I cannot recall being so pessimistic about the future. I genuinely believe that our status as a respected championship club is being threatened by a sweet shop mentality at the very top. We all had a little private laugh at Leeds' predicament, but at least they had a right old "go" at the big time. My club wimped out, and the supreme irony is that we are looking likely to swap places with them in League One next year. It will probably be predictably billed by the press and the club as Rodgers' failure, but I ain't buying that. Ultimately. this is Madejski's failure.

Much as I find it hard to say, this result however bad it may have been, is irrelevant.

There is now only one objective for this season: 21st place or higher. That means we have to treat the league like we did the Premiership.

The only results that matter are those against the teams in the bottom half of the table, and especially the ones against those around us. Then nick points off the top half if you can.

That's why we can actually afford to lose on Tuesday, and maybe the following Monday too. But we simply have to beat Ipswich, and get some sort of result at Coventry.

Whilst 4 points in the next 4 games is hardly championship winning stuff, it might just give us a glimmer of hope, and get some kind of momentum going.

Thing is though, if we lose against Leicester, I think Rodgers will be history, if not by next Wednesday (depend how many QPR put past us I guess).

Just hope Steve Coppell hasn't changed his phone number...
