Watford reject Reading FC's bid for Tommy Smith

Reading have had an offer for Watford striker Tommy Smith rejected by his owners.

The Post exclusively revealed nearly a month ago that Smith was Brendan Rodgers' top target, but Hornets chairman Jimmy Russo blasted the offer on the table from the club as "derisory".

It is believed Royals have offered in the region of £750,000 for the player, but his owners look like holding out for more cash especially after Kevin Doyle's record £6.5million transfer to Wolves this week.

Northern Irishman Rodgers is a keen admirer of the 29-year-old and nicknamed him Superman during his time at Vicarage Road as his 17 goals last season almost single handily kept the club from relegation.

Rodgers knows the financial situation at Watford inside out and the Hertfordshire club wouldn't want to sell their star man for less than £1.5million.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is also believed to be interested in adding Smith to his squad, but the player would prefer a move to Reading to link up with Rodgers again.

Stephen Hunt is also edging closer to the exit door at Madejski Stadium with Sunderland topping the list of clubs after his services.

Hunt would fancy a switch to The Black Cats, but Fulham are also interested in capturing the Republic of Ireland winger.

Got to sat that Mr Rodgers has been very good at "talking the talk" so far, but needs to be backed by the board and time will tell if the players will back him. Worries me that latest talk is about Nathan Tyson. Now I thought it was a very stupid move getting rid of Nathan in the first place, (same with Cox), but both he and the club have moved on. Next we'll be talking about Henderson & Jamie Cureton......

Jimmy Russo isn't very bright is he?

No he is thick, turns down your £750,000 offer and excepts £1.8mill,bit brighter than your floodlights I would say.

You cant blame Watford for trying ,we have just given them close on £1 million for a manager ,bound to go for some of the Doyle fee, thats football and lets get it right Smith if he comes here will be coming for the money ,not to play for Rodgers.

Bushes Bernal, Reading...Your selling Championship players at the moment for £3.5mil(and above)l because if they were premiership players you would not be in the CCC....Think about it...Cos Tommy smith was in the prem for 1 season with us,again with Sunderland..So is he a CCC player or a Prem player? Lets be honest you wont be signing any, just flogging them.

You wont be in the prem now for a long time, you had your stint now it's back to reality...Not Even Superman will get anywhere near it.

He won't go to Reading for less than £3 million. We don't need to sell anymore as we got £500K compo for a manager who has achieved nothing. Brilliant business!! Tommy is Watford born and bred and would never put in a transfer request so you can rule that one out. I reckon the only way Russo will let him go is if a prem club comes in as it would be unfair to stand in his way. Bushes, LoyalRoyal, and SWYT, I can't wait to post on here when you get beat on 26 September!!! Fred Bloggs, Chris the Vic and GoldenBoy... YOU 'ORNS!!!!!!
