Doyle: I can't improve in this league

October 23, 2008

Kevin Doyle says he is unable to improve as a player in the Championship due to the sheer volume of games.

The Republic of Ireland striker is the league’s leading scorer with nine goals.

His latest was Reading’s winner in their 2-1 win over Doncaster in midweek.

But he also missed a great chance when he over-ran the ball after rounding Rovers keeper Neil Sullivan.

And Doyle fears he does not have the time to work on the weaker parts of his game as often as he would like due to having to play 46 league matches in a season – eight more than in the Premier League.

“There are so many games,” said Doyle. “I don’t know how players are expected to improve in the Championship because you don’t get a chance to work on your technique to become a better player.

“It is just play, recover, play, recover, it’s a nightmare. It’s a strange league to prove yourself in, especially if you’re playing every week.

“I might want to work on a left-foot finish, or a one-on-one, but I won’t get the chance now because I need to recover for Saturday (when Reading face QPR at home, live on Sky Sports, 5.20pm kick-off).

“You learn as you go into games at the moment and it’s difficult.

“But it’s our problem for being here so we need to get ourselves back in the Premier League.”

Rooney and Ronaldo have both said they can improve their game, really makes you think, shame thought Doyle was a bit different .never mind Kevin will soon be January and you can be on your way .

Sounds a bit "big time charlie". He improved enough in the Championship when he arrived from Cork and there were no complaints then about the number of games. But then of course the trappings of the premiership hadn't been considered then.
