Coppell: Cut out the mistakes

By Nick Ive
October 21, 2008

Steve Coppell insists Reading will not become complacent in their quest for promotion, but fears his team are still vulnerable.

Royals lost ground on the top two Championship sides after losing 2-1 at Preston on Saturday.

It was the club’s first defeat in six matches, but their third on their travels this season.

And Coppell admits: “The key is bouncing back from a defeat.

“I think we are capable of going on a run, but we have also seen that there is a vulnerability about us at times that is like a dark cloud on the horizon.

“We are coming up to a quarter of the season and in another three weeks we’ll be a third of the way through, so the league is taking shape, but that doesn’t mean it’s definitive.

“Hull and Crystal Palace showed last season what can happen with late charges. When Neil Warnock took over at Palace they were fourth bottom and Hull were in a poor position in December.”

However, Royals boss insists:  “Complacency is not a danger. I think we lost to Preston because of mistakes.

“At any standard of football, if you make errors it will cost you. But we still had enough opportunities to have won.”
