Blunder ref back on duty

Stuart Attwell will be back on Premier League duty this weekend, despite his high-profile blunder at the weekend.

The 25-year-old referee has been chosen as the fourth official for Middlesbrough’s top-flight meeting against West Brom at the Riverside on Saturday.

Attwell hit the headlines for the wrong reasons by mistakenly awarding Reading’s first goal in their 2-2 draw at Watford last Saturday after the ball had gone wide of the post.

However, despite having been replaced for last night’s Carling Cup clash between Ipswich and Wigan in favour of Mike Dean, he has been spared further punishment.

It is not the first time Reading have benefited from a goal that never was.

Tommy Youlden was farcically awarded a goal in a 2-0 win at home to Rochdale in the opening game of the 1975/76 season, even though his free-kick had hit the side netting.

Fred Bloggs is Ian Wright in disguise! A bit of re-training on the rules and a few league 2 games will be enough punishment.

Both the referee and linesman should be sacked immediately. I know I would be if I showed such dereliction of duty in my job...
