Westwood enjoy successful tournament in anniversary season
July 04, 2012
Westwood Wanderers marked their 40th anniversary with another highly successful tournament at AWE Aldermaston over the weekend.
And their Under-12s team had a particular reason to celebrate after carrying off the Consolation Cup in their age group.
Their final against Kennet Valley was settled by an own goal.
An Alfie Hermon throw-in caused confusion in the box and the ball went in off the shoulder of a defender to secure a 1-0 win.
Caversham AFC Meteors won the Under-12s Cup final, beating Thatcham Town Harriers 3-1 on penalties after their final had ended 2-2.
Callum Chinn scored a great goal from an acute angle and Tom Holmes turned the ball in from close range for Caversham whose successful spot-kicks were taken by Oliver Elsen, Sullivan Allaway and Tom Holmes.
But they were indebted to keeper Kyle North for pulling off a decisive save in the shootout.
More than 130 boys teams aged between Under-7s to Under-15s entered the tournament.
The Under-7s and Under-8s matches were non-competitive according to Football Association rules, while all the other age groups had a winners' trophy and a consolation competition for those teams that failed to qualify from their group for the main competition.
Two goals from captain Roy Willis were enough to give Bourne Patriots B a 2-1 win over Meadway in the main Under-13s final.
Bourne, who have now won eight tournaments this summer, were also indebted to keeper Charlie Shackleford and some great defending by Jordan Mooney and Bailey Roffey.
The Under-10s final was an all Eldon Celtic affair with the Whites beating the Greens on penalties.
Ethan O’Kelly, Jannia Scott and Tyrese Weekes all scored from the spot, while keeper Murphy Cawan made a vital save to help secure victory in the shootout.
Marquice Morris had ensured the game went to penalties when he cancelled out the own goal that had given Whites the lead.
Eldon Celtic also won the Under-14s age group with their Lions' team edging out AFC Newbury 3-1 on penalties after their final ended goalless.
Dan Muino, Josh Nice and Kairo Mitchell were all on target from the spot.
Caversham Tigers beat hosts Westwood Wanderers 1-0 in the final of the Under-9s main cup thanks to a penalty in normal time from Owen Johnstone.
Eldon Celtic won the Under-9s Consolation Cup final 3-1, Osmond Mansaray (2) and Harley Deacon-Turner netting.
Goals from Harry Woodward and Rhys Milton secured a 2-1 win for Kennet Valley over Berg in the main Under-11s final.
It was Kennet’s fifth tournament triumph of the summer. Their previous successes came at Chinnor, California, Theale and Thame.
Kyle Stone was the goal hero as Theale Tigers Orange won 1-0 against Bourne End in the final of the Under-15s Consolation Cup
Westwood Wanderers chairman Chris Bullock said: “It was a big team effort between managers, parents and some of the children. Without that community support the club would not exist.
“We had the odd shower over the weekend, but the pitches were in the best condition we have ever seen them in.”
