The Wokingham & Emmbrook players have the opoortunity to fulfill what will be, for many of them, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity if they can beat Flackwell Heath in the Reading Senior Cup semi-final on Saturday.
The Sumas are playing for a place in the final at Madejski Stadium next month and for many, it will be the only time they ever get to grace the playing surface of a world class football stadium.
However, for some of the squad, a win at Flackwell (3pm kick-off) would actually signifiy their second visit to the home of Reading FC, having previously won the cup three years ago.
Current players David Bellis, Nick Bateman and Luke Lee all made apperances in the 3-0 win over Woodley Town in May 2009, and boss Roger Herridge wants to see them use their experience to inspire this team to cup glory.
“It would be a nice end to what has been a long hard season if we could get to Madejski Stadium,” he said.
“The players probably won’t get the chance to play at a Premier League ground again in their lifetime so it would be very nice for them to be able to do that.
“If you speak to the lads that played there last time they will tell you that it was a night that they will always remember.”
Saturday’s meeting will be the fourth time the sides have met this season, with Wokingham currently edging the record two wins to one.
And although Flackwell have been through some personnel changes since the last time the sides met, Herridge is still expecting a very tough game from the side that finished fourth in the Hellenic Premier Division.
“We will go into the game with confidence,” he said.
“Flackwell will be much changed from the side we faced last time because they lost a few players around Christmas, but they will still be a decent side and will go into the game just as confident of getting a result as us.”
Herridge is hoping that Ashley Mitchell, James Rusby, Jack Broome and Alex Luis should be back available for the tie, although Sam Whiting, the only other current player to have appeared in the last Madejski Stadium final, is definitely out with a broken fibula.
