Shortwood United kept their quest for the league title alive as Bracknell Town’s slim hopes of avoiding bottom spot at the end of the season took another dent.
The visitors had too much quality for the home side who yet again suffered defensive lapses.
Kevin Slack fired at Chris Adams before for the hosts, Martin Bradshaw and Ben Knight – the two players who shone brightest for the Robins – combined with the former picking out Knight who could not direct his header goal wards.
Terry Bohane did his best to open the scoring, but his shot was claimed by Adams.
When in the 33rd minute he managed to lob Adams, full-back Adam Kennedy was on hand to clear off the line.
For all of their pressure, it took an own goal to put Shortwood ahead in the 38th minute.
Joe Tustain swung the ball in and as Jake Parrott headed across goal, Tom Barratt’s attempted clearance spun wickedly over his shoulder and beyond a despairing Adams.
The Robins were handed a welcome boost at half-time with the introduction of popular striker Harry Swabey who has missed most of this campaign and was not expected to return until next season.
Substitute Matt Bennett extended the lead a few minutes after the restart as he met a ball from the left.
Bohane then got in on the act on 67 minutes. Afforded too much space, he had time to swivel and slot past Adams.
Knight pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining, using quick feet to beat James Baldwin, he picked out the far corner in some style.
Slack completed the scoring in the 89th minute with a shot which deflected off Dan Sleet to leave Adams wrong-footed.
There was further disappointment for the Larges Lane side as second-bottom Witney Town gained a victory over fellow-strugglers Fairford Town, leaving Bracknell four points adrift with only four games remaining.
Next weekend sees the Robins make the short journey to face Ascot United before travelling to Highworth Town on Monday April 2.
