Bracknell Town came close to snatching a point against one of the Hellenic Premier Division promotion favourites as Shortwood United visited Larges Lane on Saturday.
In an unfamiliar 5.30pm kick-off due to the Hellenic groundhoppers visiting Larges Lane, the season high crowd of 146 were treated to a great advert for the league as United proved just too strong.
The first half belonged to the visitors who took a 10th minute lead when Dan Tillson failed to hold Luke Benneyworth’s monstrous long throw with captain Ross Casey finishing from close range.
Casey and Matt Green then squandered chances for Shortwood, while at the other end Ben Knight was denied by a tremendous last-ditch tackle from Jamie Coates after rounding goalkeeper Martin Pearce.
Sam Whiting, though, drew his side level in the 42nd minute as his cross from the left took a wicked deflection off Alex Allard and beat the stranded Pearce.
The lead, however, lasted less than two minutes as Ben Pugh scored a goal-of-the-season contender, playing a one-two with Alton Axton before unleashing an unstoppable 25-yard drive which crashed in off the crossbar.
Both teams continued to force the pace in the second period and traded chances throughout, with Knight and Whiting going close for Bracknell and Green doing likewise for the visitors.
The Robins kept trying for a second equaliser, but couldn’t find the breakthrough, with Robert Yorke-Goldney having the best opportunity, firing over from close range.
Yorke-Goldney, though, did bring his side level in the 82nd minute when Whiting’s cross beat Knight, but fell to winger Yorke-Goldney at the far post who drilled home.
With Bracknell looking likely to claim a hard-fought point, disaster struck in the 88th minute as Pugh’s right-wing cross deceived Tillson who could only palm the ball into his own net.
With no time for the home side to find a response, the game was narrowly lost for Bracknell.
Saturday sees the Robins welcome Spartan South Midlands Division 1 side Wodson Park in the FA Vase first round, with the Hertfordshire side having already won two matches to earn the right to face Bracknell.
