Lessons to be learnt from our young winners

November 30, 2007

THE most moving moments in the Pride of Reading ceremony are always when youngsters are recognised for sheer guts.

James Togher, aged nine, was named Child of Courage. James, of Berkeley Avenue, Coley, has had more illnesses in his young life than most people have in a lifetime.

He has battled a series of serious illnesses including Prada Willi Syndrome, Lymphoma cancer and a genetic liver disease.

Despite this, he goes to a mainstream school and was full of beans throughout the ceremony.

He said he was really pleased to get an award adding: “I’m going to put it in my bedroom.”

Sam Pither, aged 12, is a young carer looking after his three-year-old brother Owen who has cerebral palsy.

Despite the family’s housing problems in Southcote Lane, Southcote, Sam has been accepted in the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth.

He said: “I am pleased to get this. I didn’t expect it.”
