Support pledged for local newspapers

March 19, 2009

A leading Tory MP visiting Reading has promised to call for a debate in the Commons to see what can be done to support local newspapers in the “crunch”.

Michael Gove, shadow secretary for children, schools and families, made his pledge when he visited the Evening Post offices with Reading West parliamentary hopeful for the Conservatives, Alok Sharma.

Mr Gove described local newspapers as an important part of local communities.

He said: “Newspapers are one of the effective ways to get people to talk to one another.”

“Newspapers are not just a business, they are part of what keeps a community together and intact,” he added.

Mr Gove, who began his career as a local newspaper reporter in Scotland, visited the office in Tessa Road last Friday.
