Brown bin charges to come in next month

Brown bin users are reminded charges will apply from April 1.

Anyone who wants their garden waste collected fortnightly will have to pay an annual collection charge of £30 for a 240-litre standard bin and £26 per year for a smaller 140-litre bin.

Cllr Dorothy Hayes, executive member for the environment, said: “Once residents have paid for the service they will receive a sticker which they will need to attach to their bin for the collection to continue.

“Anyone with a brown bin who has not paid their annual charge and displayed their sticker by April 1 will not have their garden waste collected.

“As an alternative, residents can purchase biodegradable garden sacks at 50p each and these are available at small retail outlets throughout the borough.

“Home composters are also available and garden waste can also be taken to Longshot Lane household waste recycling centre.”

Charging £32 for the bin in the first place and then £26 or £30 for emptying it (or not if contents are frozen) over 52 weeks is taking the mick. To make it worse, a brown bin is rarely used EVERY week, in any case.

Looks like it's back to the good old bonfires then.

But it does say 'pay and display' by April 1 - so perhaps it's just an elaborate joke after all.
