Firefighters called to 'fire' in Bracknell High Street

By Becky Barnes
March 18, 2013

Reports of a building on fire in the High Street triggered fire crews from Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading to be called at just after 2pm today (Monday).

A passer-by dialled 999 when they saw what they thought was smoke billowing from derelict former council block of flats Enid Wood House.

A fire spokeswoman said it was a false alarm and was actually dust from works going on there.

Firefighters were turned back after the stop message came back at just before 2.30pm.

When Mite did my kitchen 2 years ago, you wouldn’t believe the “who har” that was gone through just to drill a hole in the ceiling as it had asbestos in it. Special sucking drills, masks and full boiler suits. Made me wonder if I was safe in my own home. Yet when the council sent out a plasterer to rip down some of the same ceiling and re-do it, there were no such measures and it just got pulled down. It does make you wonder if a full risk assessment has been done on Enid Wood House as I can’t believe it’s not made of similar materials that are in my house as back then, asbestos was the “wonder material”.

This is the second time in a week the fire brigade have been called out because of these works. What is this dust emanating from the building and possibly harming the environment? Have any surveys been done to establish the presence or otherwise of asbestos?
