Congratulating the leader of Bracknell Forest Council on his award, councillors showered cllr Paul Bettison with praise.

Speaking to a full council on Wednesday, February 27, cllr Dorothy Hayes revealed she had instigated the nominations which led to the prestigious award. She said: "When I saw the announcement of the judges’ special award for Contribution to Local Government I felt I knew the ideal person to nominate.

Council leader deemed 'inspiration' after winning top award

"Paul matched the criteria perfectly, holding many extra positions of responsibility.

"I was delighted when so many of Paul's colleagues supported my nomination, with 16 members backing me plus many others who submitted forms privately.

"The quality of the borough reflects Paul's fantastic leadership by providing excellent services."

Cllr Bettison thanked the room for their support and said: "I want to thank my friends and colleagues and can honestly say I knew nothing about this until a letter appeared through my door.

"It was a great pleasure and privilege to receive the award and I couldn't do it without such a fantastic team."

It would be churlish not to acknowledge the award that Cllr Bettison has received from his peers for his contribution to local government in recent years but it is pertinent to ask just what has he achieved for Bracknell Forest during this period? The town centre regeneration programme stumbles on without any end in sight, the provision of better local healthcare facilities remains unresolved and the need to provide more homes in the area is now somebody else's problem. Perhaps Cllr Bettison should be invited to explain just why he feels the award is justified!

"Paul matched the criteria perfectly, holding many extra positions of responsibility."

Or you could interpret that quote as 'this man wasted no opportunity to turn public service into a full-time well-remunerated occupation'.
