Ambulance crew control van wheel fire

By Jennie Slevin
February 28, 2013

An unlikely team assisted firefighters today (Thursday) when an ambulance crew spotted a van with a wheel on fire.

The van had been travelling southbound along the A329M when one of its tyres burst.

The friction of the flat tyre against the road caused the wheel to set alight.

A fire team from Wokingham Road was called out to the van between Winnersh and Coppid Beach at 9.45am but by the time they got there the blaze had been controlled by a passing ambulance crew with a fire extinguisher on board.

Crew manager Charlie Bell said: "It was only the wheel on fire but if the ambulance hadn't got there before us it could have been the whole van.

"The driver definitely would have lost everything in it."
