Hoax callers report fake flat block fire

By Becky Barnes
February 24, 2013

Time wasters put other lives at risk when they reported a fake fire at a block of flats last night (Saturday).

Crews from Bracknell and Wokingham attended The Cedars, Wayland Close, Harmans Water, after the hoax was called in at 11.15pm.

Hoax and inappropriate ambulance calls still a problem despite drop

Bracknell watch manager Michael Fulwell said: "There was clearly no fire when we arrived.

"It wastes quite a bit of time because we had to check none of the flats were on fire."

The crews took around 20 minutes to knock on every door and check each flat was safe.

He went on: "It disturbed people and they were all looking out of their windows.

"The worst thing in the world is the idea we could be going to one of these hoax calls when someone needs us on the other side of town and we get there too late."

A Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman added: "Please remember hoax calls are serious and can stop us dealing with real incidents."

One day they will desperately need help from the fire service but will discover they were called out on a hoax visit. Now that would be karma!

So why are you giving them the oxygen of publicity which is just what they crave?
