Q & A with Ken Newland

By Becky Barnes
February 20, 2013

Wokingham Without parish councillor Ken Newland, 64, is also chairman of Crowthorne Carnival Association. He works as a freelance consultant trainer in Bid & Proposal management.

What is your favourite food? Rib Eye steak covered in Montreal seasoning, oven cooked wedges, fresh onion and pepper sauce. And a glass or two of red wine.

What is your favourite holiday destination? We have a Holiday home in Devon, abroad we like both Southern and North East Spain.

What was the last book you read? The Tao of Twitter by Mark Schaefer, which is about how to use Twitter effectively for business development. I am the only man I know who will admit to reading 50 Shades of Grey and the Hunger Games.

What is your favourite TV programme? I am not a huge telly fan, preferring to pursue hobbies and web research. I will admit to being Strictly-holic. I really enjoyed Last Tango in Halifax, anything with David Attenborough is a hit, Waking The Dead is my kind of drama.

What painting or photo do you have on your wall or desk? My study/office is full of photos of kids, grand kids, parents, and of course Joan and I. And a Tarantino print. And a sign that says 'The hurrier I go, the behinder I get'. Which sums me up.

What is your biggest regret? None. If you make decisions honestly and with the best information you have at the time, then even if it proves to be wrong later it was still the 'right' decision. I don't live my life with regrets.

What hobby/hobbies do you have? Too many for my own good. Maintenance and gardening for two houses is a big 'hobby'. I am an accomplished DIY-er. In addition chair of Crowthorne Conservative Branch, CEO (unpaid) of the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP), and a bit of a technology junkie creating 'movies' from holiday snaps, editing photos, learning about new IT 'stuff'.

What is the one thing you would like to change about Bracknell Forest and why? It would be to clone the Crowthorne community atmosphere to Bracknell neighbourhoods that are without it.

If someone could ask you one question what would it be and what would your answer be? How would you like to see the local environment change? I would like to see a fast link between the M3 and M4 with no lights or roundabouts. I would like to see the Dutch approach to sharing in-town highways between cars, bikes and pedestrians all at one level (no kerbs).

Is it just me, or the does the thought of Ken Newland, community champion, councillor and defender of the failed Crowthorne religious movement 'Hope Zone', proudly boasting that he reads 50 Shades of Grey not sit quite right?
