Reprieve for Loddon Bridge Park and Ride

February 20, 2013

A park and ride service which has recently been hit by flooding is to continue operating for another year.

The site, at Loddon Bridge, in Winnersh, had been set to close last year after Wokingham Borough Council and the landowner, National Amusements, failed to agree on renewing the contract.

But the two parties agreed to a one-year extension, and a similar deal has been reached for it to continue running until February 2014.

The service has seen customer numbers drop in recent years as the site is forced to close when the neighbouring River Loddon is put on flood risk alert.

Wokingham and Reading borough councils are working together to identify new park and ride locations.

Cllr Keith Baker, executive member for highways and planning in Wokingham, said: “We continue to support the park and ride as part of our programme encouraging travel behaviour change.

“Park and ride services are worthwhile facilities for residents, offering convenience of travel and helping to reduce the number of cars on the road.”

This needs to be put into context. If I remember correctly it was closed for less than a total of three weeks last year and in most previous years was not closed at all. It only takes a year of excessive rain and resulting flooding for the doom mongers to suggest that it is permanently flooded.

It is very sensible use of an area of flood plain to use it as a car park even if it is occasionally out of action. The weather warning systems usually give adequate notice of when it is likely to be out of use. Only an unpredictable very large thunder storm is likely to cause it to be flooded without notice and that can happen in other areas not adjacent to a river.

Whats the point when it's closed half the time due to it being underwater? I wouldn't park my car there, but I would moor my boat there.

Perhaps turn it into a aquapark?
