Dr Phillip Lee says MPs' salaries are "unfair" compared to chief executives in the NHS and on councils

Dr Phillip Lee "I'm not asking for a pay rise...."

By Jennie Slevin
February 20, 2013

Bracknell's MP has told his constituents MPs should be paid more, but has stressed he is not asking for a rise.

Speaking at an intense Q & A session at Sandhurst Community Hall on Thursday, February 7, Dr Phillip Lee revealed his salary is a third of the size of Bracknell Forest Council chief executive Tim Wheadon.

The Tory politician, who used to earn a GP wage on top of the £65,738 annual salary as an MP, also claimed £9,869.80 this financial year in expenses for accommodation in London.

During a question and answer session at Sandhurst Community Centre in Yorktown Road, he said: “It’s a tough ask to come out and ask the public for a pay rise.

“You want quality decent individuals to hold people to account. There are 650 members of Parliament, it’s not really a lot of people.

“If I have a lunch meeting with someone do you think that’s a business cost or do you think I should pay?”

He said: “I get paid a third of the amount the chief executive of Bracknell Forest Council gets paid.”

He added: “This isn’t to say I’m asking for a pay rise. How can I face my constituents working in the private sector making nothing when there are local authority and NHS executives getting paid £160,000 to £200,000 a year?”

However, Dr Lee warned that if people kept bashing MPs "anyone half decent will leave" and people could be left with a lower quality of politician.

Hello, my name is timespassing and I am a conservative!

And then along came our own Dr Lee and following an appeal to him to support a cause I am interested in and his response I took a little more interest in the type of person I've been voting for all these years. I checked the names of MPs who had signed the motion and could not find the name of this avowed supporter of a cause dear to his heart. In fact, I found it hard to find anything where he had nailed his colours to the mast. When I looked at his cronies in Westminster it was more of the same. The opposition are little better and seem to be able to fight their causes only by trying to ridicule and bully their opponents.

So there we have it. I can never again vote conservative and I will never trust labour. The liberals are to my mind whatever the other parties with the majority want them to be and UKIP merely fellow-travelllers of the tory persuasion.

My name is timespassing and I am a conservative but there is no longer a conservative party as I recognise it.

Crimson Dawn - revolutionary housewife with an over inflated sense of intelligence, wit, and humour.

Or a sad sack inadequate who pops up toward the end of a debate to troll and belittle the valid arguments put forward by Bracknell voters and readers.

But then, forwarding any kind of argument or debating point is too much like hard work and requiring a brain to be engaged.

I think Crimson you may be overlooking the fact that there are a number of people with similar ideas contributing here. Are you another Tory who has an axe to grind? If so, please don't single out one individual who is not displaying as you accuse "hate" but to be frank putting forward an honest and balanced appraisal of the way in which the current MP acts and is calling them to account. As the electorate we have no way of demanding the recall of an MP, but we surely can pose questions ad call them to account through whatever medium is open to us.

So Crimson, instead of making the occasional sniping comment, why not do as many others do on here and other places and make a valid contribution. Obviously if you are not capable of making any contribution which has meaningful content then save us all from your immature perspective by keeping quiet.

And didn't I read recently that wages in Bracknell had dropped back to 2007 levels? I wish we could say the same about utilities and food. And petrol!

After watching a really odd game of rugby - Scotland v Wales - I have to be honest and say I am enjoying the comments posted more over this story and the obvious considered opinion of many people about our MP. Sadly though I feel some of the more vocal ones will be taken down.

Just in case the more recent comments are removed I have copied them for posterity and posted them on my blog so there is a record. Sadly 24x7 coverage of this site is not on offer from me, so to those commentators who wish to be more vocal please feel free to comment on my blog too.

In response to DFT, I too am wondering why a traditional English word meaning strange is not permitted here as well.

There is something decidedly qu££r going on here. And I mean Dr Lee, his supporter (Olds Oak), Bracknell Conservative Association and to some extent the position of GetBracknell mods and how they take down anything which slates the MP and local "ruling class”. I say ruling class as that sadly is how they see themselves. Lee's attitude, the likes of Fuhrer Mason and company sickens me.

More sickening is the fact that Lee's lies are condoned by this paper/website.

There was a climb-down and to quote a blog "Bracknell Forest Standard Grovels to Dr Lee...." over his working as a GP. Now Lee can be proven to be a liar. He said, and the paper stated “we now understand this arrangement" - him working as a highly paid part time doctor in Slough “ended on January 7."

So DOCTOR LEE & Bracknell Standard how do you explain the subsequent declaration of paid work at the same Practice on 14 January? I say clearly for the record, you DOCTOR LEE ARE A LIAR.

So now the clock starts ticking. 24 Feb 2013. 5PM. When will this statement be taken down?

By the way QU££R - replace £ with an E due to the rather PC policy against using a common English word.

I'm not into statistics but realise the same figures can be used to show totally opposing things. Perhaps someone who understands these things can explain for my benefit why a local median is compared against a national median. I dare say locally the gap between low and high earners is far greater than other areas. Housing is twice the cost of some other parts of the country and there are many other price inequalities so those at the lower end of the pay scale probably have far less disposable income than we imagine. £18,000 in Bracknell isn't going to go anywhere near as far as £16,000 in the Bolton You could argue that poverty is greater here than elsewhere..

Old Oaks - the Tory delusion really has set in fast with you lot hasn't it.

George Osborne "We will maintain that AAA rating"

How is that anything but a failure of Osbornomics and a failure of the Tory led coalition. Utter incompetence time and time again. Say what you want about Labour, and the excuses thrown up by Lee and the rest of you about inheriting a mess in 2010. At least Ed Balls was/is an economist of some worth (Harvard teaching fellow and scholar in Economics Dept. Economics analyst and lead writer for FT).

George Osborne - failed journalist and trust fund rich boy through soft furnishings.

But hey, spin it anyway you want. The Conservatives have screwed the country, and it's full steam ahead to complete the Great Dismantling before being shown the door in 2015.

As for your woeful spin of poverty statistics - you ARE diminishing the status of children in poverty in this constituency by correlating a difference in median income nationally and locally. By insisting that median incomes are higher than the national average you are saying "yeah they're poor, just not as poor as others."

Two of the biggest indicators of how Conservatives view those less well off in this constituency: 1) the invisibility of such issues, from the MP down; 2) the rocketing of Foodbank use at Kerith - and the fact that they have to put out urgent requests for more food.

This should not be happening in Bracknell - especially when you take a similar sized constituency like Solihull, with similar relative affluence, and note that they have HALF the number of children in poverty as Bracknell.

The ideology of British Conservatives has always scapegoated and punished the less well off - and you never learn. And you'll keep getting shown the door until you do.

Meanwhile the MP bleats that he earns less than Tim Wheadon - and kids and families in this town face a hungry future, and the Foodbank stops that from happening.

And by the way Olds Oak - as the only supporter of Lee why not show your true colours and tell us all who you are?

In fact I challenge you to be a big brave Tory :)

Whoever said the discourse was about me & Lee?

It's about Lee and his whinging, oh woe is me attitude. Stick on topic - it is all about you Leader, his moaning about income and if you read the original story "class"

You really need to get out more - away from Finchampstead - and see what is going on. Maybe you too will see the Tories are a spent force and Lee is a money grabbing, self-serving Muppet.

Back to the rugby.

   Disgruntled.

Check the BFP link - That is where the quote about child poverty (60 Median%) and numbers in Bracknell come from.

And take your blinkers off - the conversation here has been wide ranging. It has not just been about Evans and Lee.

Winstanly.

I did not say Child Poverty was less serious. I set down the current status.

It might be politically rather hard for the Tory party, but in both Italy and America borrowing costs actually fell after a downgrade.

I think DFT has a good point there. Who is Olds Oak? Is it an individual or as suggested a committee of local Tories. I think the latter.

Personally I enjoy the Tory Sycophant response as it warms my heart to see how desperate they are becoming. I am really looking forward to 2015 - will Bracknell Forest lead the way and show this leach of a man (Lee) and the other likeminded Tories the door.

I was supposed to meet with Lee this morning to explain why I dislike him so much. I decided to cancel as I really could not be bothered to hear him try and explain away his actions; also I had asked for a written confirmation of the meeting which was not forthcoming so was another reason I stated. His response was: "Up to you whether you want to bottle it or not” – sorry? "bottle it"? Are we in the playground Dr Lee? Is it a case of "My dad is bigger than your dad"?

No Dr Lee, my blog is clear and there is no way you will change my opinion of you, your party or your double income, pension and dubious expenses for a flat! I want a decent LOCAL politician who has Bracknell as their home and is foremost in what they represent in Parliament. That is why I decided I would not meet you.

Continued from below. Now earlier, Child Poverty and Unemployment were mentioned and you made the rather intriguing statement “Relative poverty relates to the number of children living in households below 60% of the median household income..” I do so love it when you pull quotes from Wikipaedia, in this case:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_in_the_United_States

However, it was very kind of you to reference the strategy Bracknell Forest Partnership are suggesting of how to tackle Child Poverty in the Borough. That however is just a smokescreen by you to detract from the obscene actions of Lee. I want to know which member of the Council, or BFP or the Conservative Association or are you Doctor Who himself? I ask because you trot out the usual rubbish which one would expect of a politician who is trying to detract from the facts. You are using one of the Bliar era tricks of hiding bad news with something worse – typical spin.

This all leads to your questions:

“How would you suggest that we fix the poverty problem? Give everyone a handout? Or design some kind of hand up? How much council tax extra would you pay to support more hand outs? Given the size of the problem cutting the salaries of a few high wage earners would not go far.”

Nobody is discussing that here. We are all questioning what planet your MP is on. The consensus of opinion is that he is useless, believes in himself only and as such needs to go. Why are you so alone in supporting him? Doesn’t that send you a message? Or are you too blinded by blue to see the truth? Stop trying to be clever quoting statistics and referencing material which is not always relevant. You normally lose, go quiet and hide for a while.

I look forward to your response in about 24 hours after you confer with your committee on a response.
