Number of Foodbank users doubles in a year

By Jennie Slevin
January 29, 2013

The number of hungry mouths queuing up for food handouts has almost doubled in the last year.

A report from the Kerith Community Church Foodbank, shows the number of packages given to the needy rose from 3,007 in November 2011, to 5,552 compared to the same month in 2012.

The report also shows that in the last two months of 2012 more than 1,500 children were given food by the charity. However more food keeps coming in, with donors giving more than 55,000kg of food in November last year.

Geoff and Pat Hallett, who run the Foodbank at Kerith Community Church in Church Road, are still searching for additional storage to house everything.

They said: “We are still looking out for a larger store of about 150 square metres to accommodate all the stock.”

For more information about the Foodbank call (01344) 862 699 or go to www.kerith.co.uk.

And now the Conservatives think benefit money is enough to feed yourself and your family. People should only need food banks to top up.

Sheesh!

I seem to recall a few weeks ago Cameron said Food Banks were a good idea. They showed how charitable people were. Which was either callous, or ignorant, or both.

   We're all in this together.

At least Phillip Lee is proud to have voted for policies that have seen an ever greater number of this country's citizens relying on the noble efforts of volunteers to stave off hunger.

Which means he must also be proud to have voted for a tax cut for the wealthiest.

I'm assuming that includes the executives and investors of the energy companies who regularly hike the price at exactly the time of year energy use increases. Which leaves ordinary folk a choice between heating your home or feeding your family.

Welcome to the 21st century, Britain.
