Beavers, cubs and scouts clear up Wildmoor Heath

By Laura Nightingale
January 21, 2013

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts helped clear scrubland while learning about wildlife on Wildmoor Heath.

Around 15 youngsters from 1st Owlsmoor group joined wildlife experts from the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust as part of the MY Heathland project, funded by Bracknell Forest Council on Saturday.

The team helped remove birch and pine tree saplings to open up the heather on the Crowthorne nature reserve.

Rhiannon Harrington, community wildlife officer for Berkshire, said: “Winter is a great time to explore this nature reserve and the children received hands-on help with practical tasks.

“It was the first of a pilot project to encourage groups such as Scouts to learn about the heathland, the dangers of arson and the effects of the Swinley Forest fire.”
