Lake party accident leaves man with possible spinal injuries

By Becky Barnes
December 29, 2012

An early New Year's Eve party turned into a nightmare when a young man is thought to have misjudged the depth of a lake and dived into shallow water.

Wokingham firefighters, ambulance crews and police were called to Simons Wood lake, off Hollybush Ride, Finchampstead, to rescue the 21-year-old man, at just before 2am this morning (Saturday).

A fire spokesman said a group of youths had been drinking and having an early New Year's Eve party by the lake late last night.

It is believed the young man stripped off and dived into the lake at a depth which was more like a puddle.

Ambulance crews arrived on scene first and called for the firefighters to assist with the rescue, which took around an hour.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the man was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital, in Reading, with possible spinal injuries.

She added tests would be carried out today.

Will this young man have to pay for the cost of the fire brigade. I believe that when an ambulance is called to a road accident the person injured gets the bill. If this young man was drunk then he should certainly pay as he was acting irresponsibly.
