23,000 back Heatherwood petition

December 17, 2012

Campaigners against the closure of several Heatherwood wards presented a petition to hospital’s management.

Members of Defend Our Community Services (DOCS) and Save Heatherwood Hospital marched from Ascot High Street to the hospital in London Road.

Terry Pearce, chairman of DOCS, handed over the petition which contained more than 23,000 signatures to Berkshire East PCT non-executive director, Tony Dixon, last Saturday.

The proposed changes in the Shaping the Future consultation aim to permanently close the Ascot Birth Centre, the stroke rehabilitation ward and the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).

Terry, who organised the event, hopes the hospital board take notice of the petition, he said: “It’s clear from the public response that people are very concerned at seeing services they use and appreciate threatened.”

The NHS has been consulting about the future of health care in East Berkshire.

this is an instance where our elected officials should take note of public sentiment.

If I were the local MP - say - even though I may personally believe a better course of action would be to close the hospital and create up-to-date provision in Bracknell - I would have to respect the wishes of those who I represent.

Irrespective of political loyalties.

Phillip Lee and our local government busy bodies should perhaps reflect a little more on their declarations for supporting LOCAL health provision.

23,000 is not to be ignored but I suspect they will be.
