Firefighters remove stuck thumb ring at Heatherwood Hospital

By Becky Barnes
November 26, 2012

A hacksaw, pliers and a screwdriver were used by firefighters to remove a ring from the thumb of an 18-year-old woman.

A fire crew from Bracknell station were called to Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, at 7.15pm last night where staff at the minor injuries unit needed assistance.

Bracknell watch manager Miles Cooper said: "The ring had got stuck and her thumb had swollen up.

"She was fine - medical staff had started trying to get it off in a number of ways."

The crew were there for around 20 minutes.

Reminds me of the apocryphal tale of the young man who went to the emergency room (USA) complaining of a pain in his shoulder. When the doctors found no evidence of anything wrong he claimed the pain had migrated to his back. Again no outward signs of a problem.

An x-ray was performed and it was then that it became apparent what the problem was - the chap had performed an enema on himself with a glass bottle of cola, the bottle got stuck and had 'migrated' fully. He then attempted to remove the popular beverage vessel from his person using a coat hanger - which itself then got stuck.

Remember kids - plenty of roughage in your diet will avoid embarrassing episodes in the future.

What is it with these thumb rings? If we had meant to wear them, we would have been given 5 fingers.

Most large jewellers have a piece of equipment specially designed for cutting off rings. The fire brigade, pliers, hacksaws and a screwdriver all seem un-necessary and way over the top.
