Families urged to give children a loving home as part of National Adoption WeekBy Laura Herbert

Families are being urged to offer children a loving home in a push to attract more fosterers and adopters.
Members of Bracknell Forest Council’s family placement team have been speaking to people across the borough as part of National Adoption Week.
Shoppers were given balloons and information at Tesco in Warfield to encourage people to think about fostering or adopting a child.
Twelve children in Bracknell Forest are in need of a placement and the team is particularly looking for homes for children over three years old, sibling groups and children with disabilities.
Marie Sullivan, publicity and recruitment officer for the team, said: “Bracknell is a small area and people don’t understand there is a need locally.
“We had lots of people asking for information about adoption and a couple of families said they had been thinking about adopting but they had preconceptions about why they couldn’t adopt and age was a popular factor.”
Councillor Gareth Barnard, executive member for children and young people, added: “There are no blanket bans in adoption, so please don’t think we’ll turn you down because you’re over 40, single, or don’t own your own home.
“What we really need are people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life. People who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came in to care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family.
“Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you think you might have what it takes, please pick up the phone today.”
The team were at the branch, in County Lane, on Monday and Tuesday as part of National Adoption Week, which aims to raise awareness of adoption and encourage potential parents to come forward.
There are an estimated 4,000 children across the country needing adoption every year.
