Abandoned bonfire 'wastes' fire service's time in North Ascot

An abandoned bonfire 'took up the time and resources of the fire service' in North Ascot this afternoon.

Bracknell fire crew spent doused the embers and cleared logs where youths left a bonfire in the woodland behind Fernbank Place at 12.30pm.

Firefighter Peter Bailey said: "They probably see it as an innocent act but it took up the time and resources of the fire service.

"Closed up areas are not suitable for bonfires as they do not provide protection or means for putting out fire.

"There is a danger it could have spread through the woods."

The team spent around 40 minutes making the area safe after a neighbour saw young people abandon the fire and called 999.

Firefighter Bailey added: "Even if you want to get rid of your garden rubbish, it is better to recycle it than to burn it."
