Paralympic fever hit Bracknell when the Torch came to Sainsbury’s.

Shoppers at the supermarkets in Bagshot Road and Princess Square were greeted by members of Wokingham and Bracknell Red Diamond Sports Club, who were selected as torchbearers through the Sainsbury’s scheme, and mayor of Bracknell town Councillor Shelagh Pile.

Customers at the Bagshot Road store paid a £1 donation to have their picture taken with the torch on Sunday, raising £332.94.

Cllr Isabel Mattick, chair of Red Diamond Club said: “We are immensely grateful to Sainsbury’s for all the help and support they have given us not only as Torchbearers, but the sponsorship.

“We have been able to talk to local people and it is gratifying to learn of the intensive interest there has been in the Paralympics as well as the Olympics.

“The Torch Relays and the Games have demonstrated the wonderful community spirit that has been so evident over the last few weeks. Taking part and being present at the Games has been a magical experience. We have lots of happy memories.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have supported our club and we will never forget the interest the public showed in the torches and having their photos taken.”
