Derelict bank gutted in fire

By Jon Nurse
September 07, 2012

Firefighters fought a blaze for hours at a derelict bank in Winkfield last night.

Two fire engines from Bracknell fire station together with engines from Windsor, Wokingham and a specialist control unit from Dee Road were sent to the former headquarters of HFC bank bank in North Street just before 0.30am.

The building is due to be demolished and replaced with houses and the fire started in the roof.

The crews battled the fire with hoses from hydraulic platforms.

Bracknell fire station watch manager Miles Cooper said: "The fire was in part of the roof when we arrived. It spread to more or less the entire building.

"Because it was a half demolished building it was very difficult to deal with it safely.

"It was more of a defensive fire fighting act when we stop it spreading to nearby buildings. Embers were being emitted and we needed to make sure they didn't catch any other areas.

"The cause was under investigation when we left."

On site machinery including gas cylinders were moved away from the fire.

The crews left the scene at around 4.30am.
