CCTV plans for Pinewood Centre

By Jonathan Low

Vandalism, anti-social behaviour and safety fears have prompted plans for CCTV cameras at the Pinewood Centre.

The football club’s windows have been smashed and parts of the miniature railway have been torn up in separate incidents at the centre in Old Wokingham Road.

Sports clubs and businesses based at the centre have welcomed parish council plans to improve safety and introduce CCTV at the entrance and exit to the site.

Wokingham Without Parish Council discussed the issue at its meeting on Monday, and has organised a forum to consult clubs about the installation of CCTV to make the site more secure.

Head coach at Pinewood Starr Boxing Club Les Stevens said: “We’ve had a few windows broken and people trying to get in, but I think it would be a good thing if it stops vandalism.”

Mike Platt, secretary of the Pinewood Rifle Association, said: “Why would anyone be against it?

“We want the best and all the members would be delighted.

“We don’t get much vandalism but with winter coming, some of our female members would feel more secure with it.”

Judith Moore, the town clerk, said the problem was not too serious, but it did warrant action being taken.

She said: “We do have an ongoing problem with small scale vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

“Some of the football club’s windows have been broken and parts of the miniature railway have been torn up. It’s very low level stuff but we would be looking to install cameras at the entrance and exit to the site to make it more secure.”
