Grandmother becomes author at 70By Becky Barnes

A grandmother-of-eight who left school aged 15 with no qualifications and broke her back last year has proved you are never too old to achieve your dreams.
Anne Wall, 70, of Charterhouse Close, Forest Park, has become a published children’s author and signed copies of her debut novel The Librarius Quest at Bracknell Waterstones on Saturday.
She said: “It went very well and was a very successful day thanks to a Facebook campaign by my family.
“Lots of kids from my grandchildren’s school came along. It was nerve-wracking and I had butterflies but it was brilliant.”
Until Anne took a diploma in children’s writing, the only exam she had passed in her life was her driving test.
Anne, who said her grandchildren were her ‘most critical audience’, added: “Never having passed an exam in my life I had to work especially hard to achieve my goals.
“Reaching this point has been both eventful and, at times, challenging.”
Anne worked for most of her adult life and had various jobs including working in the fashion department of Woman magazine in London but it was always her ambition to move to the country and write for children.
She said: “Determined to do the job properly, I embarked on a creative writing course and after three years of concentrated study, completed the course and was awarded a diploma – which to me was quite an achievement.”
Anne retired to Devon but moved back to Bracknell four years ago to look after a member of her family, writing her book at the same time.
She said: “The Librarius Quest evolved from a 1,500 word assignment as part of my writing course. It was my tutor who suggested that there was a novel in it.”
Anne broke her back in a freak accident in April last year and while feeling down due to pain, lack of mobility and hospital stays, she managed to finish the book.
She then received a call from an American publisher and her dreams were realised.
She said: “I am now working on my second book and plans for a third are firmly in place – I am now fulfilling my dream.”
Anne is now mobile and on the road to recovery.
The Librarius Quest is a fantasy adventure with a target readership of nine- to 12-year-olds and is the first in a planned trilogy. It follows Alfie Tucker who follows a quest after receiving a mysterious map containing an intriguing message.
Anne added: “The message is about the value of reading. I would encourage youngsters to read as much as possible in order to learn.
“You achieve your dreams by very, very hard work.”
