Birch Hill man Jon Clinton admits murdering wife Dawn

By Becky Barnes
September 03, 2012

A Birch Hill man has admitted murdering his wife.

Jon Clinton, 46, was due to be re-tried at Reading Crown Court today but changed his plea this morning.

Clinton originally denied killing his wife Dawn, 33, at the family home in Inchwood on November 15, 2010.

He was jailed for 26 years in May 2011 after a jury convicted him of murder.

His conviction was quashed in January this year when a change in legislation abolished the common law defence to murder of provocation and replaced it with a new defence of 'loss of control'.

Mrs Clinton, a former dinner lady at Birch Hill Primary School, died from head injuries and asphyxia after she was hit with a wooden baton and strangled with rope and a belt.

Tomorrow, Judge John Reddihough will hear from Clinton's defence and pass sentence.
